Despite the mild wea- ther and even though there's no snow, the maple syrup season is now upon us. At Purpie Woods Con- servation Area, the maple trees have been tapped for a couple of weeks and the evaporat- or' is fired up to boil down the sap. In fact, we have already pro- duced several gallons of pure "extra light"' maple syrup. This is the seventh year for the maple syrup iemonsuration, and it just seems to be getting more, popular al the time. During March aRd April, close to 5,000 school children will be attending tours (ail openings are now book- ed). Purpie Woods Con- servation Area is locate- d on the loth Concession Road (Oshawa) imme- diately east of Simcoe Street, north of Raglan. If you would like to find out how we make our deliclous syrup (and perhaps even buy some), why plot visit the sugar bush for a guided tour? The public is in- vited to attend on the weekends of Mareh 19- 20 and March 26-27, as well as during the week of March 21-25. Community groupa who would like to arrange a tour must, contact the Authority of- fice at 579-0411. Special arrangements can be made for disabled indi- viduals or groups. Authority staff wil illustrate Indian, pioneer and modern methods of producmng maple syrup. Tours wil meet' at the -area parking lot at il a.m. and 1 p.m. Fresh maple syrup produced at the sugar bush will be sold as it is available, at $8.50 per litre and $5.25 per haîf litre. As usual, the Durham A.M. Kiwanis Club will be assisting the Authority with a pan- cake weekendon April 9-10. Tours will be con- ducted every 20 minutes from 9:20 a.m. to 3p.m. The ever-popular pony-drawn wagon rides wii be available for children at a cost of 50e each. And, of course, maple syrup and pan- cakes wiil be sold. There la no charge for ad- mission, parking or guided tours.
