PJAGE 6, ,WEDNESDAY MARCH 2e,1983, WHITBY FREE PRESS PROGRESS EDITION ,SALUTE TO PROGRESS Whitby progressing at one million square feet per year By R.A. ATTERSLEY Mayor, Town of Whltby As one of eight munîcipalities in the Region of Durhame Whitby covers an area of 56 square miles to include Brooklin, Myrtie and Ashburn, with a total population of 38,437. Based on the portion of the region covered by Whitby, the town'certainly offered its share in in- dustrial development during the past year. More than one million square feet of industrial space was added due- to the new companies relocating in this area, as well as many of our "'at home" industrial businesses expanding. Whltby lias certainly been fortunate during this past year's pressure of economic situations with high interest rates and contmnued double digit in- flation. Although 22 new companies were an asset to the industrial and commercial sector of Whitby, we take equal pride in the people joining our com- munity and will strive to offer the level of services they deserve. Residential development is defmnitely on the up- swing i Whitby, to keep pace with the growing population to this area. Our institutional growth made a remarkable comeback with a 1,400 per cent increase in building permit.s as of December 190'> On the cultural scene, we were also pleased to welcome the Marigold Dinner Playhouse to Whitby as a major highligbt in professional live theatre. Relating to the entertainment field, 1 would also like to compliment. the growing attraction to'Cullen Gar- dens and Miniature Village, and look forward to their new expansion of 87 acres within the next few years. The Region of Durham definitely offers a place to live - work and play, within ail our eight commu- nities. Proof of this growing interest in the region, as shown at the Whitby Tourist Information Centre, reflected a total of 16,000 visitors during the past seven months of 1982, which certainly designates increased visibility to our area. We in the region must continue to promote the tourism industry which we are possibly taking for granted. Our beautiful lakes,. trails, historical attractions, special events and so many more rich and glorious areas to, visit, are a calllng card to visitors and very good for our business people. Emphasis on the posi- tive attributes of our region will'always breed suc- ceas. We have it ... we deserve it and let's enjoy it... the Region of Durhamn which Whitby is proud to be a part.
