The 13-year-old would have answered confi- dently, "an author"'. His confidence would have been based on the fact that he published his first children's book at the age of 13. Now, at the grand old age of 199 he- is the author of seven books. Korman, who visited St. Paul's school in Whitby last week, wrote many of those books before most of us have given much thought to what we are going to A native of Thornhill Ontario, Korman is studying screen writing in New York, and returned to Canada to promote his books. The Grade 4, 5 and 6 students at St. PauI's were treated to a first- hand look at the in's and out's of writing and publishing books. "An editor is someone who takes al the most important parts of your book out," Korman told the students slyly. "And since your book is just a series of important pýar- ts, there isn't much left." Other pieces of wis- dom: Differences of opinion are just an ex- cuse for editors to have a business lunch. One word you can always associate with the Canadian publishing in- dustry is "slow" . His first book grew out of a writing assign- ment in Grade 7, the students were told. "The publisher said, 'You wrote this for school? Are you crazy?"'. But the book was published. The students, who were treated to a few hours of Korman's in- sights and humour, elutched copies of his books for autographs. His titles include, This Can't Be Happening at McDonald Hall, Go Jump in the Pool, I Want To Go Home and Beware the Fish.
