But the A.C.V.I. concert band members have corne up with a solution that will break the monotony* for the stu- dents and provide fun at the same time. The band members are presently preparing for their annual round- the-clock play-a-thon. Tis year about 100 par- ticipants will play for a long and exhausting 25 hours - an hour longer than last year. The event wiIl begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 4 and will continue until 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5 in the A.C.V.I. auditorium. Visitors are welcomne until 10 p.m. on Friday nîght and after 7 a.m. on Saturday. But there is another reason the band is hold- ing a play-a-thon. The funds raised wiIl con- tribute to the expenses of a proposed band trip to Calgary, Aberta for one week in May of this year. The band is hop- ing to raise $5,000 through their play-a- thon effort. In o rder for one mem- ber to travel to Calgary, he must raise about $50 an hour. Also his in- volvement in other band fund-raising even- ts, such as dog tag sales and bakte sales, are in- cluded. Future events include a car wash and an afghan raffle. In order to help cover the expenses of the trip, the conductor, Mr. A.J. Uranowski, and band president, Julie Emm, have written to Open House Canada requesting a grant. If Open House Canada considers the band a worthy cause, they would be among 20 other applicants chosen to re- ceive grants. How- ever, that is not al that is happening here at DO'C as the semester draws to a close. It is a rather sad time as well because we say good bye to the Grade 13's. We are sending them off with what we hope are pleasant memonies of their high school years and we wish them the best of luck in the future. The end of the semes- ter also brings with it another sad event, espe- cially for the Grade 1's. Our exchange student, Jose da Silva Neiva, known to us as Ze, is returning home. Ze carne to us Iast year from Brazil via the Rotary Exchange pro- gram and we have been blessed with his cheer- fui presence duning the past year. Nlow unfortunately, it is tirne for us to say good bye to Ze who wilI, be returning to Brazil with- in the next two weeks. Everyone here at DO'C wishes Ze a very happy and prosperous life - we'Il miss you. On a more cheerful note, I hear' Green House has been default- ing in intramurals. I know that they are ahead by a few points and defaulting a few games won't hurt their standing mnuch, but corne on Uireen!i l'un up your socks. Are exams any reason to shirk your responsibility? Yes. That's what I thought. Well, don't worry. Exams will be over soon and a new semester wilI begin with new classes, new teachers and a new round of tests. (Thought I'd end on a cheerful note!) Good bye to the Grade 1's, good bye to Ze, and good luck on the exarns.
