PAGE 8, WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 22, 1982, WHITBY FREE PRESS Report from, Queen' s Park By The Hon. George Ashe, MPP (PC - Durham West) Ontario Minister of Revenue w At this time of the year, many opportunities are provided for friends and families to share the joys and traditions of the hqliday season. Each of us should also take a few moments to ens4ure that the safety of our loved ones and our homes is not over- looked. In light of the increased hazards which are often associated with the holiday season, I feel that this safety message is particularly appropriate. THE1 THE I would encourage you to observe'these holiday safety tipe suggested' by the Ontario Safety League and share them wlth everyone you care about. *Christmas trees should be purchased fresh and kept molst throughout the holiday season. e Check al l ights for cracked'insulation, frayed wires, or other damage before placing them on your tree. e When decorating outside, use lights which are in good.condition and are approved for outdoor use. sTurn o'ff ail decorative lights before going out for the evening or going to bed. *Make sure the toys you purchase for children don't have sharp edges or other unsafe features. Toys for young ýchlldren shouldn't have small parts that couldbe remnoved. and stuffed in ears or sWallowed. 9. When entertaining friends and relatives, serve food along with drinks, discourage heavy drinking, and prevent those who.have drunk too much from getting behind the wheel. *Smoke detectors and fire extinguishers make excellent gifts. They are a perfect way to say, 'I care about you"l. As 1982 draws to a close, I have taken the opportu- nity to reflect on the challenges which have been faced hy ail Ontarians. We have proven our deter- mination and our strength in dealing with them and I have no doubt' that we can continue our commit- ment to working together to build a strong commu- nity in which we understand and respect the needs of one another. I look forward to working with you as your repre- sentative in the Provincial Legisiature to meet the challenges which 1983 will bring. To each ofyou, may I extend my personal best wishes for the holiday season - niay the new year bring you and your family happiness and joy. P.S.
