WHITBY FREE F VON believes in home health care The philosophy of the Victorian Order of Nur- ses has been and will continue to advocate that "all people have the right to a comprehen- sive, co-ordinated and compassionate health care and that whenever possible, care should be provided in the familiar surroundings of the home. The VON is a non- profit, volunteer-led, community health organization dedicated to providing skilled nursing care in the home. The local office locat- Whitby's unique theatre The Durham Region now has its own fully professional theatre. The Marigold Dinner Playhouse opened on September 7 with a pro- duction of Bernard Slade's Romantic Comedy. Stars were the new proprietors of the Marigold, well knòwn personalities Nuala FitzGerald and Larry Solway. They gathered about them a high quality cast including Sylvia Lennick, Ralph Small, Laura Press and Marlene Foran. The Marigold is unique. Originally a church, the previous owner had the sanc- tuary converted into a conventional theatre with raked seats replac- ing the pews, and a full stage where the altar area had been. Unlike the usual din- ner theatre, the space is broken into two separate but adjoining areas. A four-course dinner is served in a well appointed dining room in what was the old church hall on the ground flòor, then patrons go upstairs to the theatre. To complete the theatrical atmos- phere, a lobby bar was added. The producers have already begun rehear- sal for their second show, I'll Be Back Before Midnight, and are offering subscrip- tions for three produc- tions: Midnight, Plaza Suite and Marriage Go Round. Each production will run for ten weeks. Now well underway, the theatre has been well received by theatre-goers and by many who are ex- periencing professional theatre for the first timne. Miss FitzGerald and Mr. Solway also do an Open Line radio pro- gram every morning on CKAR Oshawa, adding another way to reach the quarter million Durham Region resi- dents, as well as listen- ers in the east and north suburbs of Metro Toron- ta. MINI-BAZAAR A Mini-Bazaar will be held on Wednesday, November 24 at Kings- view United Church from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lunch will be served. The church is at the corner of Wilson Road North and Adelaide St., Oshawa. ed in the Oshawa General Hospital pro- vides an I"around the clock" nursing service to the Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, Oshawa, New- castle, Port Perry and Sunderland Regions. The fee paid per visit by a VON professional nurse is the cost incur- red by the branch to make the average visit across the Region. This fee is paid for in a variety of ways: the Home Care Program nakes use of Ministry of Health (OHIP) monies to keep people with' acute and longterm ill- nesses at home; the Regional Community and Social Services Department will assist clients financially with home health care costs. Other clients may have extended health care in- surance which covers nursing visits at home. Some clients do pay part or all of the VON's fee, themselves. It is to this group that the United Way dollars represent a thankful assistance. The five VON nursing teams in the Durham Region Branch consists of 13 full-time, and 23 part-time. professional nurses; three clerical office staff; one district director and one senior nurse. 1982 has seen the development of an excit- ing and necessary new program in the Durham Region. As more people return to home settings with illnesses and in- deed, more of our popu- lation live to be older citizens with some physical disabilities, professional services and volunteer visitors must work together..
