I picked one up at the Kitchený Cupboard in the Safeway Plaza ýand gave the one sent to me by the Hfistorical Society to a friend. Witby'Downtown revitalization! What an im- portant topic and what an interesting one. I had in- tended to -tell you about the panel but Doug Ander- son stole my thunder and gave ail the details in last week's Whitby Free Press. The panel consiats of five men, ail experts in their 4fields. *This expertise is something which we need to learn about and benefit from. A fund of knowledge and these bours frorn 1 to 5 p.m. will be beneficial' and informative to put it rnildly. The benefits derived from listening to this panel could multiply your monetary gain over and over under certain circumstances. >To be creative, informed and positive is a requi- site for property owners and merchandisers. Nega- tive tbining flot only impedes you, but has a ten- dency to pull others down with you. Meetings like this can inspire, and you may findl you are on the baindwagon too. With the thought in mind tbat you may find monetarly and personal gain this seminar should be a good learning experience for ailconcerned. The Building Rehabilitation and Improvement lCampaign (B.R.I.C.), provides grants for haîf of proýjectin costa up to $2,000 ifa -building b as been- jýdesignated under the Ontario Heritage Act. Whitby is nowellgible for these grants. Old buildings can be recycled for new use such as the old llbrary wbich isnow the Manpower Centre, and the Centennial Building which houses to narne a fewv, the Chamber of Commerce, the Y and the Red Cross. Because the original use of the building be- Speaking, to YoU By SCOTT FENNELL, M.P. (PC - Ontario) w M.,p He is a classic empire-builder. His National Energy Program en)arged the importance of bis energy department but put the energy industry on a sick bed. His idea of energy self-sufficiency is to buy, witb your money, a string of gas stations and expensive government advertising. As one of the most left-wing members of the Tru- d,eau cabinet, he sees the foreigri investmnent issue as a chance to castrate capitalism in Canada. He would prefer to bave 50 people work for bis goverri- ment than have 100 people work for a foreign-owned firmn. And now Trudeau bas rewarded the man whose favorite passion, it, seems, is to drive money and jobs out of Canada. We hear of slumi landlids and this in turn can make slumis. This we,,don't want in Wbitby. There are pros and cons which must be very carefully thought out and tbe experts with experience can help us learn the wbys and wherefores. Apart from buildings, back alléys and walkways can be tidied up and made attractive for people at little cost. As we say s0 often, eye appeal can grab and propel you rigbt tbrough a store or business door. An attractive and interesting facade promises something beyond and cari compel you to enter. An untidy, junkyplace wiil s end you scurrying past at a great speed, just to bypass it fast. Ater giving great tbougbt to places like Elora, Markbam, Niagara on the Lake and Perth, I realize that one street bias to 6àe a focal point. This is wbere tbe tourists and shoppers gather and many of them are older and not eager to cover much ground on foot. To be able -to be bost to two or tbree million people in one season, as some of these places do, makes us realize what potential our town has. Change a few bylaws if need be, and bring on the attractive store fronts, crafted lamps and signs and watch for resuits.
