WHITBY FREE-PRESS, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 25, 1982, PAGE 5 May or attacks oui' stand on disarmamentisu Mayor Bob Attersley went on thie air waves of an Oshawa radio station to criticize the Whitby Free Press' editorial -on nuclear disarmament. In last week's edition of the Free Press, this newspaper supported the idea of having a question on nuclear dis- armament placed on this >.year's -municipal' election ballot as have the City of Toronto and the Town of Ajax. Attersley made" his comments on a phone-in radio show on CKAR hosted by Larry Solway and Nuala FitzGerald. He said that there is ani "unwritten law" that çÇoundfilwil not interfère, in issues of national or provincial -scope' unless there is a ýdirect effect on the municipality. "We have an- unwrit- ten law that we should not-interfere," he said, pointing out, "We do elect somnebody to represent us in Ot- tawa."t The mayor also said that it "appglls me the municipality should put somethlng on the bal- lot." Attersley said that the town has received some correspon denice from the City of Ottawa ask- ing that the issue be part of the November 8 muni- cipal election. rnatters we're talking about," hle said. I"We (the 'council) try to leave the provincial and the federal things that corne up to those people that represent us."1 Nuclear dis'armament is "not an issue for Our coundil," Attersley add- ed. However, East Ward Coundillor Joe Drumm told the Free Press last Friday that hie woUld support placing the issue before the local electorate. Thsis the first generation living under the umbrella of being able to annihilate Mother Earth,"' he said. "This is the first timne mankind can do that - it's one hell of a thought." Drumm disagreed with Attersley's asser- tion that the issue would bring out party politics. "It's above polities - it's-life and death,"' he said. "Yes, 1 would support having it on the ballot," Drumm replied, when CONT'D ON PG. 10 Champion marigold grower Joanne and Henk DeHaas of 917 Dundas Street West are seen here standing behind this year's crop of marigolds. The DeHaas' won first place in the marigold contest sponsored by the Whitby Chamber of Commerce. Not only wiJl they receive a keeper trophy at a dinner to be. held in Sèptember at Cullen Gardens and Miniature Village but their names wiI go onto a plaque that wll be kept at either the Whitby Municipal Building or at the Tourist Information Centre.- DeHaas has been growing the bloom for about 4O'years and says that they are "easy to grow - they are a very responsive flower." The front lawn of their home is hiterally decked out in yellow and orange marigolda that are offset beauti- fully with a large variety of other plants. The winner in the commercial category was College View Apartments, 100'Blair Street', while the Whitby Public Library won in the institutional category. -Free Press Staff Photo Faulty wirng, caused ffre Faulty electrical wiring appears to be the cause of a fire in a Colet- te Street home that oc- cured last Tuesday morning. Aceording to Whitby Deputy Fire Chief Tony VanDoleweerd, the fire broke out at about 11:29 a.m. on August 17 and was mainly contained in the bathroom of the resi- dence at 38 Colette Street. VanDoleweerd said that the fire department quickly had the situa- tion under control and there were no injuries. The deputy chief add- ed that the department is conducting some tests but they "belive it (the fire) to be of electrical origin." The department esti- mnated damage to the house at $5000 and $1,000 to contents. Other parts of the, house suf- fered what was describ- ed as minor smoke dam- age. ART DEPARTMENT ON PREMISES ATTERSLEY "Why are they asking us to put something on our ballot? " he asked. Inistead of dealing with the question of dis- armament on a munici- pal1 level, Attersley sug- gested that interested persons make their feel- ings known to Ontario Riding MP Scott Fen- neil. "The people should get their thoughts through to him,"1 he said adding it is a "national issue." One thing Attersley is afraid of if the question cornes up locally is par-' ty politics, something that the municipality generally attempts to put aside..
