Editorial It took Anna Argante, 12, of Calais Street, three-and-a-half hours to create her "Tutti Fruiti" salad. But ail that work paid off as she walked away with first prize in thie salad cate- gory 'of the Whitby Public Library's "Kids' Cooking Contest" that was held Iast Thursday afternoon. *Anna said that her salad was made ini a watermelon with apples, pears, watermelon balis fashioned with an ice cream, scoop, peaches, bananas and strawberries. (It should be noted that our photographer sampled her fare and-found it delightful.) "I had it ail pictured ini my mind, so I just did it, " Anna said explaining how she got the idea for her culinarycreation. Aside from her first place ribbon, Anna received a copy of Mary Iàsko's (The Happy Cooker) new book. Taking second place in the salad category was Michelle Ratchford while Kelly MacLean's "Fiv-Cp Salad" took third prize. The contest had four categories: salads; desserts; drinks; ,and, snacks., Jessica Kleiner and her Chocolate Hedgehog took first prize in the dessert category . Sam Shewan and his pecan pie took- second place while third-place honors went to John Morris-. Kelly Faller's Swamp Water was topa in the drinks section with Debbie Konkle's fruit punch earned second place. Lisa Jackson came away.with the third prize ribbon. In the snack category, a pumpkin cake baked by Jennifer Mackie was number one with Lana Tarrant and Scott Harries taking second and third place respectively. After the judging, anxious spectators were given the oppor- tunity to sample the fare laid out before them and-this news- paper is compelled to report that hardly a morsel was left. In that editorial, this publication stated that there i& notblng -Wronig ýwith'the town holding- its own reëferen dumn on the disarmament question during this year's'municipal elec- tion. However, Attersley maintains that this is in no way a local election issue and h e was "ap- palled" that the suggestion was even made. 1He added that the people of Whitby do elect someone to represent them in Ottawa. Foran is a recent graduate of the University of Windsor and FitzGerald said she was more than impressed with her talents. Tickets for opening night are also beginning to become harder to find.
