PL Speaking. to You By SCOTT FENNELL, M.P. f zmpm(Pc -Ontarlo) Bad business In these hard' economic times, the life of a small businessman is bard enough without the federal government welching on its debts. And yet'this is exactly what a crown corporation, is doing to small businesses in Durham Region. Close to $8W,000 is owed to about, 100 small credit- ors by ON Marine, a part of Ottawa's Canadian National Railways. ON Marine owns Lakespan, -a company which shipped truck trailers across Lakie Ontario from Oshawa to a town in New York. Because it was a venture that was helping our community and the, fact that Lakespan was owned by-the federal government, small' businessmen gladly extended it credit. They'll flot make that mistake again. In April the company abruptly suspended its operations, laid off its 50 employees and left behind close to $4 million in bad debts. Three million dollars is owed to the Toronto Dominion Bank. MEET MEAT MOODIES INTHELOUNGE LIVE ENTERTAIN MENT Fêaturing ".Amethyst" k Thursday, Friday, Saturday . What Ottawa can' t seem to appreciate igthat most small businessmen today live on a tight- cash flow and that many have been hurt badly by the business practices of Lakespan and the govern- ment. If these amail businessmen survive, they cer- tainly wiIl not trust Ottawa to pay its bis on time.
