Couneil Column w Submitted by members of WHITBY TOWN COUNCIL By THE WORSHIPFUL ROBERT ATTERSLEY Mayor and Regional Councillor Corporation of the Town of Whitby During my visit to a number of schools lately, I frequently listened to the following question: "Mr. Mayor, why was the Marigold chosen as the Town's official flower?" I would like to take this opportunity to explain the reasoning behind our choice to other interested stu- dents and hopefully help each to understand the meaning of our new official flower. As you are aware, Cullen Gardens and Miniature Village has become Whitby's major tourist outlet, attracting millions of people from all parts of the world. From these people, we receive many com- pliments and have constantly been identified as Whitby - the Garden Town of Canada. Council, staff and many residents of Whitby acknowledged the contribution from Cullen Village to the town but wanted the identification to support the gardens and reflect total community involvement by choosing a ART DEPARTMENT ON PREMISES SPRING & SUMMER SHOES FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY UPTO OFF -EXAMPLES OF THE SAVINGS-- MEN'S CANVAS, CASUALS Reg.18.98 SALE 999 LADIES'CANVAS SHOES & SANDALS Reg.19.98 SALE 99 CHILD'S SANDALS Reg.9.98 SALE 598 SEE AND SA VE ON OTHER SHOESIN STOCK KA MEKAFOTWEAR WHITBY MALL WHITBY SHERIDAN MALL PICKERING Vandals a minority single flower as our symbol. We were definitely not a delicate town as resem- bled by a rose or other similar suggested flower. We had to choose a flower which was "reliablet' to remind us of our heritage; "flourishing" to repre- sent our business sector; "durable" to demonstrate our industries; "productive" to reflect our growing community and the youth within it as well as "beautiful" like our people. The rnarigold was the answer. I trust you will carry the pride we feel in the marigold as it depicts the characteristics of our town, Whitby ... reliable; flourishing; durable; productive and beautiful. Speaking ofLthe beautiful community we have, I am appalled~at the recent increase in vandalism from a small minority group somewhere within this area. The destruction of our new gardens at Cen- tennial Park has been rectified thanks to the Corri- dor Area Ratepayers Association and Mr. Bruno Harilaid who so kindly-donated financial support. Citizen support in contacting the Durham Region Police is sincerely necessary if anyone should wit- ness any vandalism. I would not request any citizen to intercept, just contact the police immediately. This support aids all residents by saving taxpayer dollars and enabling the police to reach the indivi- dual before total destruction takes place.:I sincerely find it difficult to understand why these vandals would choose destruction as an entertainment when there are sô many recreational activities available for them to enjoy. However, destroying buildings and gardens; stealing bicycles and creating fires must be their way of demonstrating strength. To me, they are only showing weakness because they havie not the strength to compete in sports or other activities which require a strong character and a willingness to play the game of win or lose. As mayor, I may be limited to enforce stricter penalties from the municipality, but as a com- missioner of the Durham Regional Police Force, I intend to see this problem rectified. I truly believe when someone is caught burning down a school building, for example, they should be made to re- build that structure from the ground up. I hardly think they would want to burn down another build- ing .especially when they were responsible for the development and realized the pride that goes into every structure we erect in this town. We must remember these people-are a minority and will not be allowed to continue this delinquency in a town as strong as Whitby where people care about their community. I am extremely proud of the youth of our area and would hope everyone would continue to support their endeavours realizing the few bad apples only amount to a hill of beans and together we will stamp them out or change them into fine respectable people. On a more progressive note, I am certain most everyone read the fine announcement of Sony of Canada to relocate to Whitby. We are extremely pleased with their decision and at a recent meeting with the management of Sony, we were informed they had purchased additional acreage with plans to eventually expand and make their home in Whitby for many years to come. The council and staff ex- tended a warm welcome to Sony of Canada on behalf of the residents (of the town and expressed our appreciation in knowing this high standard com- pany chose Whitby as its liome. One week ago, we held a gathering at the Municipal Building to honor a great man, "Doc" McEwen as he retired from the corporation. Many tributes were paid Forbes McEwen, known to so many as "Mr. Whitby," the Marigold King, the Harbormaster and the Godfather of the Town. However, as Mayor of Whitby I know his greatest title was that of a friend. Doc left behind several challenges to open greater opportunities for the Town of Whitby. Opportunities which I believe, breathe success.. One of his pet projects, the harbor, will continue to receive priority as the birthplace of Whitby. The Whitby Tourist Information Centre was a dream we both had a few years back and become reality on June 29 as we officially opened the doors at the corner of Brock and Burns Street. This com- munity involved project received support from so very many businesses and a financial boost from Mr. Len Cullen. I believe the tourist centre will assist our downtown and area businesses as well as serving the traveller with the ultimate in Whitby hospitality. With over a million visitors to this community each year, Whitby required a profile service centre and I am certain, community donations and govern- ment support will help to retain this building as a self-sufficient centre without placing any burden on the taxpayers. I encourage you to drop in and pay our staff a visit - free Gaterade is always available, compliments of Stokely Van Camp - another sample of community spirit and dedication .,.. and take time to lounge on the beautiful chesterfields from Sklar Furniture. One look is all you need to see why Whitby is the best place to live - work and play. Have a beautiful summer. Silk wedding arrangements and everyday flowers. 101 Westmount 7252470 Oshawa, Ontario :es * ~
