The Thickson Road location gives Sony ac- cess to Highway 401 which Martin says is vital to their Ottawa and Montreal markets. The warehouse will be the distribution site for Sony products through- out eastern Canada and 60 per, cent'0f their pro- ducts will be channelled through this location. Currently, Sony products are distributed from Vancouver. The bonded ware- house was originally to provide 60,000 square feet of space but jumped to twice that before con- struction began. When it opens it will employ,75 peole. About 50 of these jobs will be new ones. Company officials pre- diet that by the end of the, second year of operation 95 people will be employed there. -The facility sits on a 16-acre site and pro- vides ample space for future expansion. "We bought. enough land so that we can stay with you a long time," Martin said. In welcoming the company to Durham, regional chairmnan Gary Herrema said: "We're ecstatic that*. you're here. "It's (Sony) a cor- poration that's a house- hold word ... it's. a cor- poration that's got con- fidence," he added, "«You 'couldn't have corne to a better site. " Sony of Canada* is owned 51 per cent by General Distributors and 49 per cent by Sony Tokyo and the former's vice-president says it's even possible that Sony will locate a manu- facturing facility at the site in the future. "lManufacturing it's a possibility," Allan MacKenzie said adding carefully that "I don't want to predict when the expansion wiil take' place."
