Once again the Whitby Iroquois Swim Club has taken part of the' competitive swim world by surprise. In just two seasons the young five-year-old club has risen from a small developing club into the ranks of the second highest division in On- tario. The 30 swimmers rep- resenting Whitby in the AAA Division Ontario Team Championships at the Etobicoke Olym- pium April 16 to 18 emerged as top comten- ders for the champion- ship title. The Whitby club, moving up to AAA Division only last sea- son by winning the 4A Ontario Team Champ- ionships, was the dark horse candidate in the nieet, but stroked into the lead early in the competition much to the surprise of the long esta- blished clubs vying for the title for several years. Approximately 550 swimmers from 20 clubs across Canada com- peted, and W.I.S.C. bat- tied it out primarily with the York Aquatie Club. The York team pulled ahead in the final session Sunday night with 491 points to W.I.S.C.'s 415. Coach Tom McLough- lin expressed pleasure with his swimmers' per- formances, but was not surprised by the club's high standing. McLoughlin had predic- ted either a first or second place ranking for his team. W.I.S.C.'S second place finish moves the club into AA competition next season. Ten-year-old Brent Walsh emerged as W.I.SC.I's top swimmer capturing two gold medals and three silver in individual events, and two gold and two silver in relay events, for a total of nine medal winning performances. Chris Donnelly, 11, collected a gold, two bronze and a silver indi- vidually and added another gold and silver in relays.- Kevin Walker, 12, won three silver and a bronze, as well as a gold and silver in relay events. GR'MLA lacrosse presentation By TOM FRANK Registrations have in- creased this year for the Whitby-Garrard Road Minor Lacrosse Association. With only three players graduat- ing from last year's Tyke team, registra- tions for the Novice divi- sion have been beyond any expectations. In fact; the response has been so overwhelming that a strong possibility exists that two complete teams can be fielded. Although this is cer- tainly a welcome pro- blem, it seeks a solûtion. Wifh four to six more registrations, a solution can be provided by creating two teams so that each person regis- tered will have the op- portunity to play in every game. For those parents who have children born in 1972 or 1973 and who are totally unfamiliar with this sport, it would be helpful to attend a "Get Acquainted With La- crosse" presentation on Saturday, May 1 in the Whitby Public Library auditorium at 1 p.m. Parents, this is your chance for you and your thildren to be intro- duced to the game of lacrosse. It is Canada's official national sport and is a last game that teaches discipline, good conditioning techniques and excellent physical skills. More importantly, the garne reinforces inter- personal skills of sharing and respons- ibility. For example, one learns very quickly that he/she has to respect all the other players' abilities and that he/she has to relv on others to achieve the rewards of the game. Also, due to the high scoring nature of the game, each individual has more opfortunity to experience a sense of The Brooklin/Whitby Minor Midget Select Hockey Team finished off their season by win- ning the Shamrock Select Tournament in Pickering. The final game of the two weekend series on Sunday, April 18 went personal achievement.
