Whitby, like many other muni- cipalities, has. prospered from its citizens having been involved in their various fields to bringing joy and'comfort to al 0f us.' For an individual to take the time to set aside a few hours to volunteer,, be it to help the handi- capped,, raising money for the hospital, to working with ki ds, to share a smile brings resuits to the giver that nothing can match.. 1How does one start to become a volunteer? Many belong to a service club or church group but many just start off by helping a neighbour who, because of sickness, needs a helping hand.. 0 f course, somnetimes a work schedule may cut in- to the time a person has to volunteer his or her time but by sponsoring their work, the yolunteer is given the encouragement and motivation to go out into the community. Whitby honors its outstanding, citizen of the year with the Peter Perry Aw ard which is sponsored by the Whitby Chamber of Commerce. Whitby also helps out with grants to assist groups such as Community Care for by helping those volun- teers, many individuals can quite often stay in their own homes a littie longer, reducing the demands placed on hospitals, homes for the aged and other facilities provided by the taxpayers. S1My hat goes off to those volunteers for the tremen- dous work that they do. Recently, Durhamn Regional Council debated a proposai that would have given both the Town of Whitby and the Town of Ajax an additional seat on council. 1 supported. this position that we should have an extra seat, howNever, some of my colleagues did not agree. Incidently, the finance department, went to the City of Oshawa because we lost the motion to keep it in Whitby by one vote. In my view, Whitby's record as one of the fastest growing municipalities in the region is justification enough for an extra vote on council. After ail, the Town of Newcastle has four members on regional council with a smaller population. Our population is growing in Ieaps and bounds, as is our share of the regional tax Ievy. It is only fair that our people are given a bigger voice in how that mQ.ney is spent. It is my firm belief that the issues of under- representation will flot go away especiaily since al projections show Whitby will maintain its current level of growth. We should not allow our position at the region to weaken. Finaily, I would like to take this opportunity to wish ail residents of the Town of Whitby a Happy Easter. we con #due qu" wn*e in mppbw Mo& ru" Siam#@-aïbmw pri < cm Dm in and leil » wW pu E DV DRAPEail.
