Thlnk springt WIIITBY WOMEN'S INSTITUTE The January meeting of the Whitby Women's Ini- stitute took place at the home of Bessie Acton, 215 Reedaire Court, on January 27 at 1:30 p.m. The president, Dorothy Gregor, was absent and the meeting was opened by vice-president, Kay Hep- burn, with the Ode and Mary Stewart collect. Four- teen members answered the roll cail, namely a current event of interest since our last meeting. The convenor, Grace Carr, gave a detailed account of Whitby's current events of the year. The motto being 'Today's news is the history in the futuure.' Topic - resolution and current events. The February meeting of the institute was can- celled due to many members enjoying vacations. The March meeting will be held at the home of Laura MacCarl, 215 Reedaire Court, on March 24 at 1:30 p.m. Visitors welcome. Topic - methods of publicity for Women's Institute.' The January meeting closed with a deliclous luncheon prepared and served by the hostesses, Aleta Campbell and Eva Noble. BROWNIE'S BAZAAR The l4th Whitby Brownie Parents group wiil hold a bazaar at St. Theresa's School on Crawford Street on March 8, 1982 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. There will be a bake table, crafts table,- fish pond and rummage sale. If you have any good rummage to donate or would like to bake some goodies, please cail Ann Smolarek at 668-4773 or dorp it off at 116 Crawford Street. It was the occasion of the club's second birthday, and table decorations, bann- ers and programs pre- pared by program chairman, Lee Hewitt, ail reflected that mood. President Althea Dar- wen set the theme "'Together We Learn"l with an aim of. sharing our goals.. Table topics for impromptu speak- ing, prepared by Topic- mistress Betty Dubow- ski, were geared to the aim 0of "sharing our goals", and the trophy for the best mini-speech was awarded to Fay Winters. Toastmhistress Lee Ir'win presented the speakers for the evening who were: Barbara Blair with an oral read- ing; Shirley MacDonald with a prepared speech with gestures and Lee Hewitt with a per- suasive speech. Educa- tional features included lessons on parliament- ary'procedure by club parliamentarian Aud- rey Beard and speech contest by Jeannette Et- ter. ,Grammarian Lee Irwin',explained the meaning of the word "obdurate" (stubborn or obstinate) and the timer for the evening was Fay, Winters. The next meeting, a special event, is the club's annual speech contest. Six, members have thrown their bats into the ring and it promises to be an excit- ing evening. An invitation is ex~ tended to the public to corne and see how mem- bers have developed in self-confidence and communication skills.
