The problem being en- countered by Whitby's renowned choral group is that they don't have a piano to rehearse with. According to Cathy Bevis, the group's spokesman, the two pianos they have used to rehearse with are now beyond repair primarily due to age. For the last several years, the singers have rehearsed in the music room of the Heniy Street High School and used the two pianos available there. One of these was a grand piano and the other an upright model. "Unfortunately, the years of use (or abuse) on these two instru- ments has resulted in their being in a sad state of irrepairability," Bevis says. "Needless to say, both cannot be tuned to proper concert pitch, have keys rnissing and the grand has one very unstable leg," she ad- ded. "Some notes sim- ply don't even play." So, after 15 years of service to the communi- ty and various charities, the County Town Sing- ers are turning to the community to help them. Bevis hopes that there is someone, a business or an organization which is interested in helping them in thieir search for a much- needed instrument. She stresses that the piano "was needed yes- terday." "This is an immediate need and we are hoping that a gesture of good- will from someone in the area will provide the County Town Singers with the opportunity to continue their generous, selfless donation of time, talent and service to others." Bevis went on to des- cribe the situation as "desperate at this point." Not only is the group currently hoTdmig audi-~ tions, but it has two booked for commit- ments for this month. One of these is a benefit for the Durham Region Lung Association on January 24 and the other is for the Cana- dian Cancer "Society on January 30 in Toronto. The group has also committed itself to other events in the im- mediate future as well as its Wednesday night rehearsals. She said that the Town of Whitby has beeñ ap- proached for a grant and have also con- sidered conducting their own fund raising cam- paing. paign. "But due to the urgency of the situation, we don't have the extra time needed to raise the funds ourselves," Bevis added. Stating that a quality instrument is needed, she said. that the group has already settled on the piano that is needed. The group needs an apartment-size Yamaha P2C "which has a repu- tation for maintaining its concert pitch and its size makes it convenient for us to transport it from place to place as is sometimes necessary," Bevis said. The estimated cost of this instrument is $3,500. "An amount the choir simply does not have," Bevis added. She said that as a non- profit organization, the group only has enough money to use as a work- ing budget. Most of this money is used to pur- chase new music. Bevis added that piano rental would cost $100 a week and that the group's financial posi- tion does not make it possible to rent one, even temporarily. "And it is nearly im- possible for us to con- tinue working without a perfectly tuned piano." (11a) "COMMUNITY CENTRE" means a building or part of a building in which facilities are provided for su'ch purposes as meetings for civic, educational, political, or religlous, or social purposes and shall in- clude a banquet hall or private club. (34a) "LAUNDRETTE OR COIN-OPERATED LAUNDRY" means a building or part of a building wbere facilities are provided for the cleaning of clothing on a self-service basis.
