Town wins award TORONTO - At the Annual Awards Night '81, of Humber College of Applied Arts and Sciences, North Cam- pus, held over three successive evenings, November 3 through 5, John Town of Whitby, was the recipient of two awards for his outstanding efforts in the Funeral Services Program. Town was one of four Humber College students to receive $100 from the Canadian School of Embalming. He was considered the best all-around student academically in relation to this unique funeral services course. Other areas awarded were in Anatomy, Restorative Art and Cosmetology and in Health Sciences. Town also was honored for his high academic standing by the Metropolitan Toronto and District Funeral Association Award. - Photo courtesy of Humber College LASCO lays off 100 employees The Lake Ontario Steel Company (LASCO) indefinitely laid-off 100 workers last week. LASCO spokesman Tony Howells said that the lay-off can be attri- buted to a softening of the steel market. "The market isn't there," he said. Howells, LASCO's employee relations manager, said that the manufacturer is a sup- plier to the construction industry, which, like the automotive sector, is down. The layoff is expected to begin tomorrow (December 24) and Howells said that thp employees have not been given a recall date. Reservations should be made now for parties Most of the dining and entertainment spots in Durham Region will close early on Christ- mas Eve and re-open on Boxing Day. One excep- tion is the Magic Car on King Street West, in Oshawa. It will be open Christmas Day. The Coach House, west of Whitby, will close early on Decem- ber 24 and re-open Saturday. The Coach House will be open New Year's Day from 4 to 10 p.m. Le Chalet on Dundas Street West in Whitby, will also close early on Christmas Eve and be closed Christmas Day. The Le Chalet has a special night planned for New Year's Eve and will be open for business on New Year's Day. Most restaurants are planning a special even- ing with dining and en- F EASY! tertainment for New Year's Eve. The Carret- to is planning a gala af- fair that includes a 7- course dinner complète with favours and danc- ing. The Carretto will also be open on Boxing Day serving a full cour- se meal and promising dancing and fun for the festive season. The Earl of Durham on Brock Street South, in Whitby, has plans for a special New Year's bash. Dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m. with dancing starting at 9:30 p.m. There will be hats and noisemakers and a limited number of tickets will be sold. This special event is being planned in conjunction with the Whitby Jay- cees. Fazios at Athol and Simcoe Street South in Oshawa will be closed over Christmas but will hold a special New Year's and first anni- versary party that plans to be a good one. There will be dining and dan- cing to Jamie Drynan. Out Port Perry way you can celebrate at Club Annrene on Scugog Island to the music of Bill Johnson and Sweet Country. A hot and cold buffet will be served af- ter midnight. Fires cause damage Two fires in Whitby last Wednesday caused damaged of nearly, $40,000. According to the Whitby Fire Depart- ment, a trailer was des-' troyed at the LCBO warehouse construction site. Loss was esti- mated at $20,000. A fire in an apartment at 110 Victoria Street caused approximately $15,000 damage, mostly to a bedroom.
