WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNLSDAY. OCTOBER 1-8, 11981. PAGE3 Overcoming "egativeness" is tuke to ov By MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff Mayor Bob Attersley has taken exception to some remarks about the downtown core that were made in a recent edition of the Whitby Free Press. In a story in our Oc- tober 14 edition, two downtown merchants expressed their con- cerns about the core and had some criticisms of Whitby Town Council and its members. Joe Ottenbrite, owner of Ottenbrîte's Men's Wear on Brock Street South, accused mem- bers of council of rarely, if ever, shopping downtown. "I neyer see themn up- town," Ottenbrite toid this publication. "They just don't show themn- selves uptown. " "That is a crock of guff" Attersley respon- ds saying that ail coun- cillors patronize the downtown. "That's a dirty shot." Both Ottenbrite and Bob Catten, owner of C and C Sound also on Brock Street South, have expressed con- cerns with the emergence of "Junk shops" in the downtown core. At the time the story was published, Centre Ward Councillor Barry Evans said that there was little council could do to regulate what types of businesses locate in the downtown. Attersley does not ap- pear to be concerned about these establish- ereoming ments, preferring to cali The mayor,- hirnseif a them "antique shops" downtown merchant, and says that many of said that merchants them have a good track shouid not only be record and poinits to the carrying the produets Nearly New Shop as an and services the con- exampie. sumier requires, but "They're just another should be offering per- attraction for the down- sonalized service as town, " he said. well. Burgess, pubtisher of the Whitby Free Press and downtown retailer, said that if more people were able to live down- town, it would eliminate much of the need to at- tract people downtown. Attersley said that the town is currently examining some pro- posais to introduce high density - residential development into' the core. place. "I agree with what he said," Attersley said. "We're prepared to look at any planning problems. " "We are prepared to review these things as they occur," he added. "We've got to keep the population in the down- town." The mayor is also in agreement with Bur- gess' views on the pro- motion of the downtown. "I strongly agree with him on the promotionai aspects, " Attersley said. "The aggressive merchants will sur- vive. " Attersley is also taking the stand of people in the downtown, ' that do agood job." However, he is quick to acknowiedge that there are problems in the downtown.
