Well that statement is not exactly correct. That win represented the team's first Division A national champion- ship. The squad bas previously won major tities in Divisions B and C. "In fact, WGRMLA bas won more medals than expected if we compare our population size against the many cities we've played against," according to team spokesman Tom Frank. These clubs include Peterborough, Scarbo- rough, Brampton, Win- dsor and Hamilton. Under the photograph that was also published, the names of Mike Cox, Mike Williams and Peter Gervais were in- terchanged. The Whitby Free Press apologizes for any inconvenience caused by these errors. Y acht club holds lasar champions hips This weekend, August 20 to 23, the Whitby Yacht Club will play host to the Canadian National Lasar Champ- ionships. The event will feature between 150 and 200 boats from across the country. For those not familiar with the sport - lasars are small sailing craf ts. Durham Bowl tournament this Saturday Durham Region's an- nual minor football championships - the Durham Bowl - wilI be played on August 23. This year's competi- tion between the Oshawa Hawkeye Legionnaires and the Pickering Doîphins will be expanded to include atoni, peewee and ban- tam teams. The tournament will be held at the Civic Fields, Thornton Road South, Oshawa. The day will begin at 10 a.m. with the atoni game and will continue with the peewees at 12 noon. The bantams will play at 2p.m. The trophies, for each of these games were donated by the Durham Regional Police Force. The Brampton Ex- celsiors literally demo- lished the Brooklin Red- men by a 16 to 6 score to win the semi-finals of the Ontario Lacrosse Association Major Series play-offs. Brampton's victory bas eliminated the Red- men winning the seven game series four games to two. Brooklin could have kept the series alive and forced it to a seventh "do-or-die" ganie but their play last Thursday night before the Bram- pton crowd left a lot to be desired. 441 can't explain what happened to us," was the post-game comment of Redmen goalkeeper W, ayne Colley. "We were fired up for the game. The guys ware talking positive and loose for the ganie. Once we got on the floor though....I can't figure out what happened. " One of the keys to the Excelsiors' win was the performance of their powerplay unit which scored five tixnes on Colley. After two periods of play, the Redrnen were down by a margin of 10 to 3. e The Excelsiors Played an almost perfect game for not only did their power plays work well but so did their passing and penalty k*lling. One Brooklin player was heard to say after the game: "IWe had no more life than a 90-year- old corpse. I was 50 angry at the end of the flrst, I could hardly talk. I was shocked and em- barassed. We played with no pride and a lack of effort. " During that first period, Brampton scored eight unan- swered goals. That, simply put, is why the Redmen failed to wln. Excelsiors wiil go on to play the winners of the Owen Sound North Stars - Peterborough Lakers serles for the OLA championdship. The winner of that series was not known as of press time.
