Herrema promises Grossman.... WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 19, 1981,.PAGE il D urham will1 promote CAD-CAM CONT'D FROM PG. 3 and Robotics. Herrema also infor- med the minister that the college "is well known for its contri- bution to industry in the field of high technology trainlng2" Placing the centre in Durham would also have many benefîts for the province as a whole, Herrema claimed. "Establishing a CAD- CAM robotics centre in Durham would, because of the region's strategic location in relation to much of Ontario's manufacturing sector, plus its ease of ac- cessability, benefit in- dustries within the By THE REV. GERALD A. HUNT Pastor Whitby Baptlst Church Witb the approach of school (sorry to bring it up, kids!) some teachers are putting together their courses on "Values Education". Their preparation may look good on paper, but will it really clarify the issues, relate values to life effectively and, through our youth, lift our world above its cesspools of violence, injustice, hatred and broken relation- ships? Witb our freedoni we have experienced mucb with values in all areas of life. Some experiments were quite constructive, others misguided, wasteful or tragic. Changing old ways was often more import- ant than learning from mistakes. The changes brought us back full circle to the sanie old ways and mistakes. In teh '50's we began breaking loose from Vic- torian values and Judeo-Christian ethics. Riding on our great new technology, with money and sex our twin gods, we had our fling. Overnight the church moved from the centre of society to its periphery. We tightened up on standards in the material world. Milk and water had to be safe to drink. Insurance had to insure, but otherwise we were reaching out to a life without rules, or rules you made for yourself. We paid well for ugliness in art and we bave been paying dearly for extreme and careless behaviour. Secular materialsm bas not paid off as we had hoped in solving social problenis. So we need values education.i We cannot return to Victorian ways, to the con- cept that somehow God is against sex, leisure and frivolity. But we must try to answer bard questions that cry out for higher values supported by a faith in something or Someone who is enduring and reliable. What will 1 do when a computer replaces me? Why do we love things and use people? Now that we have experienced everytbing and gone everywbere - and are bored! - wilI it be like this to the end? What if the end comes tomorrow? Wby is our world so ful of crime, divorce and suicide? Why do people spend far more on pet food and liquor than on helping tbe starving and destitute? Do we have to give up many of our habits and attitudes to save our sanity and our souls? New reform institutions, huge caseloads in cour- ts, line-ups for counselling and welfare, and in- creased policing may simply indicate a growth in population. Saying that the region has a commitment to the Government of On- tario Herrema indicated that Durham would un- dertake a prograni to promote the L;AD-CAM centre. The region, he said, "would imnmediately embark on a program designed to specifically promote the advantages and benefits of the facility to Ontario's in- dustrial sector." The region would also "support and co-operate with the provincial government in any ac- tivity designed to pro- mote and sell the Values education tion of mistakes, many of them deliberate. Experi- mentation bas led us back into the jungle, to despair and death. Will values education rescue us? We will always need the plumber, the lawyer and the doctor. But we need at this moment teachers who are deeply concerned about our social, moral and spiritual problems and can reach the next generation as no one else can do so well. In the "Values" section of an open bouse at a large city high school a sheet of thirty questions was offered. Those designated as "General" contained "Do you plan ahead and think about ultimate goals? " and "If you agree that our North American ways of life are not what they should be, what are some remedies you would suggest? " "Social" questions included "Do you react with disgust, amusement or apathy to: 1. violence on TV; 2. names painted on roadsides; 3. nudity in art; 4. spitting in public?" "Personal" questions included "In what areas of your life could you use more order, happiness and control?" Also "If you believe in God, is your relationship to Him personal, intimate, distant, oc- casional or only in a church setting?" There were searching "spiritual" questions like: "are you ever afraid to do something because there may be a God and He may be watching?"; "Does unconditional, unselfisb love make sense to you?"; "Do you believe that trust in God has anytbing to do with the length, harmony and happiness of marriages?" And finally, "Are there spiritual an- swers to despair, depression and suicide? " If we are to have values education, the questions are whose values? From what source? For what purpose? And can you make them work continually without the power of God as shown in the work, life and continuing influence of Jesus Christ? * ANNOUNCEMENTS ~z/(~J4~ * RECEPTION CARDS * INVITATIONS * THANK YOU CARDS 1J PRNIGADOFIESPLE 21 HavodAeS nx nai benefits of a CAD-CAM robotics centre to On- tario's industrial sec- tor." Herrema said that Durham's objectives "'parallel" those of the provincial government and stressed the benefits of having the CAD-CAM centre in the region. Above these benefits are: serviced land'is readily available, "assured supoprt from local and surrounding area industries," the centre would be central to potential users, train- ing facilities. are available at Durham College, and the "guaranteed" support from the region. After the meeting, On- tario Minister of In- dustry and Tourism Larry Grossman said that he was impressed by Durham's presenta- tion. "Yours is an interest- ing area," hie told Herrema. However, the minister was careful to point out that no decisions have been made and that the two principal rival sites are in Cambridge and Ottawa. "We will shape our decisions in view of these presentations," Grossman said adding that the provincial is looking for the "best" of everything in the CAD- CAM site. No decision on where the centre is to be located will be made or announced until some- time in the faîl. So it looks like Durham is going to have to wait with its fingers crossed. *KENNEDY SPORTS AGENCY 686-1723 lc.,o WHOLESALE AND RETAIL 370 MONARCH AVE., UNIT 21, AJAX Summer pca 20% off Flshlng Equlpment & AccessoIrles up ta 50% off ail summer clothing (Top Brand Names) ALL ABOVE SALE ITEMS WHILE QUANTITIES LAST.
