Earnings were level with last year. "Fibres Group earn- ings improved sub- stantially from last year," president J.E. Newall said, ."due to higher sales volumes and prices. However, this gain was largely offset-by lower earnings for the plastics and films group primarily because of higher raw material costs which couild not be recovered through higher prices. Chemicais group earn- ings increased moder- ately." For the three months ended June 30, earnings were $13,708,000, or $1.74 a common share, com- pared with $13,578,000 or $1.72 a share for second quarter 1980. Six-month earnings were. up eight per cent at $28,446,000 or $3.60 a share. In the first haîf of last year ear- nings were $26,238,000 or $3.32 a share. Second quarter sales were $313,240,000 com- pared with $247,641,00 in 1980. Export sales exceeded $53,000,000. Newall also reported a significant increase in shipments of nylon pro- ducts to carpet manu- facturers. Six-month sales were $596,3W,000, an increase of 24 per cent over the $482,270,000 in first half 1980. "The outlook for the balance. of the year is uncertain," Newall said. "Rapidly rising costs, particularly for raw materials, com- bined with a highly com- petitive environment, have reduced overal profit margins in both domestic and export markets."
