ENTERýTAINMENT .,,with Barry Murkar Disney tradiïtion aliive in he Fox and the Hound When Walt Disney dled, he left quite a bit of bis magic touch with lits staff. This was eviden- ced in the recent feature length cartoon, The Fox and The Hound, pro- duced by Walt Disney Productions. It was typical in many ways of the Magic Touch that Disney had with children - and adults tao. Some of the voices of the birds and animals were easily recognized, such as Mickey Rooney, Jack Albertson and Pearl Bailey. The latter did the voice of Big Mamma, the owl. In true Disney style, there was humour, ten- derness, affection and somne cruelty. 1 thouglit it was in- teresting, even touching when a sniall voice across the aisle from me started to cry when it appeared as though the little fox was going to be kiled. A small boy riglit behind me announced lie wanted to go riglit home when the going got rough for the little fox.' The fox and the liound have always been natural enemies, but Disney, of course, changed this and makes it come out the way 'e ail like to see it. The little hound named Copper belonged to an aid hunter who already had a large dog named Chief. One day, as the movie opened, the old hunter was bot on the traîl af the mother who was running for her life with her cub Todd in her mouth. The mother it was assumed got shot, and Big Momma, the owl found hlm peering out from behind a fence post, wondering wliat on eartli had happened. Big Momma got the aid widow who lived nearby ta come out into the yard where she found the fox cub. The kind older lady referred to the little fox as a toddler and from that gave him the name of Todd. Poar Todd got into ail kinds of trouble, but every time the old lady was ready to give him a clout, he looked up at her with his big, brown, sorrowful eyes, and she just melted. One day Todd trotted over to the old hunter's cabin and came upon the young hound called Copper. They became very good friends and played together when- ever Copper could get away from the old hun- ter. Copper saw the aid hunter and his gun go after Todd several times and was afraid that Todd would not reach safety, but he did. Weil one day the old hunter loaded his truck with gear, Chief and Copper and took off on.a long hunting trip. In fact, he did not return until the next spring. The old lady warned Todd that when Copper came back lie would be a- fully trained hwiting dog and playtixne would be no more. Copper came home in the spring, much larger in size and now a very proud hunter. He told Todd it was the end and their fiendship was over. Todd could not ac- cept this., The old lady, fearing for Todd's lif e, drove hlm into the woods and let himn go. He met a girl fox named Dixie and it was alinost love at firat sight. One day the old hunter and the dogp got on the trail of Todd and Dixie and it was a wlld chase with traps snapping, guns blazing and a big black bear after them ail. When the aId hunter got caught in one of Mis own traps, the bear at- tacked him. Copper at- tacked the bear, and then Todd got into the act. The aid hunter finally realized that Copper and Todd liad an un- touchable friendship and accepted the fact. The fox and the hound became good friends again and lived liappily ever after. It was a typical, but very en- joyable Disney film, and one that children will want ta see again and again. Disney in his wisdom realized this and this 15 why his films keep on returning and making more and more money.
