WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 12, ! 98 1,WHITBY FREE-PRESS Whitby Free Press S:PO:RTFS WEE]K Whitby soccer squad earns tough victory over Ajax By SALVATORRE PALAZZOLIO In recent Durham League soccer action, the Checker's Variety team, which represents Whitby in the minor rnosquito division, took 3 out of a possible 6 poin- ts in its last three games. However, such an apparently positive resuit has a bittersweet flavour for despite a resounding victory against Bowmanville and a prestigious tie against current leader r L Ajax, it suffered a 'disappointing close decision in its meeting with the Oshawa Rangers. The first of these contests ended 6-1 in favour of Whitby with the first half being a hard fought see-saw bat- tle. The local side scored almost too easily after a series of reboun- ds with Paul Moschella. Bowmanvillé did not waste any time in equal- izing the game but Whitby took the lead again with a beautifully executed goal. Paul Moschella sent a mid- air pass from the centre to winger Justin Moore whose beautiful catch at shoulder height was followed by a quick pass to centre forward Mike Reier who in turn let go a shot to the left of the Bowmanville goalie. The second haif produced four unan- swered goals by the Whitby squad: Paul Moschella on a direct free-kick, Jeff Bugelli following a corner kick deflected to him by David Uden, Mike Reier connecting and for the second time David Uden. The game against the Oshawa Rangers was closely contested by both sides but Whitby did not seem to have the necessary determina- tion to take the two poin- ts exéept after Oshawa had gone ahead on a rhigh shot with ten min- utes gone in the second haif. At that time they completely dominated the play so much so that they succeeded in equalizing but as they INVITATIONS n pressed on in an attempt to take a win they were surprised by a rare counter-attack with the referee allowing a goal .scored by an Oshawa player in an off-side position. Following this loss, the Checker's Variety players partly redeemed themselves WE'RE AUTO BODY EXPERTS " Complote Collision " Repairs & Painting " Frame Repairs *Free Estimates *Cars done by Appointment OnIy "MNot Your Averog.
