PAGE 23 Whi*tby defeats both Oshawa & Bowman ville By SALVATORBE PALAZZOLO Whitby's Checkers Variety soccer team has succeeded ln taking two other Important vic- tories in Durham League championship: It affirmed itself as the better side against Oshawa Soccer Club by 3 goals to nil and con- firmed its superiority against Bowmanville with a resounding 6-1. . The game against Oshawa saw an almost uninterrupted Whitby dominance which during the fiirst period of play resulted in several near-misses by the local forwards and only one goal by Justin Moore, who, after receiving a perfect assist by,)David Uden put the bal in the back of the net. The second balf followed a similar pat- Whitby wins gold medal at Gloucester WGRMLA PeeWee Lacrosse team bas ear- ned another gold modal ln the Gloucester tour- nament last weekend. They are now ready to leave for the PeeWee Natonals in Longueuil, Quebec. They will travel there on August* 3 and play a game a day startlng on thp Tuesday. Each team wlll play at least five games. Whitby's opposition will Include Brampton, Peter boro,' Port Coqultlam and Victoria from BOC. and Baie Como from Quebec. Ail are division 'A' teams. Closing ceremonies will be on August 9 and the team travels home on the following Monday. The firat ggme in the tournament was against the second team from Gloucester. Witby won by the score 15 to 1. Greg VanSickle scored 4, Wayne Cornisb scored 3, 2 each from Emery Campbell and Dave Clarke, singles by Dean Vanderlinde, Tom Frank, Rich Dyment and Simon Lewis. (8 different boys scored.) In the second game, Wbitby beat Longueuil, Quebec 12 to 3. Rich Dyment scored four goals, Dean Vanderlin- de got two, and singles by Dave Clarke, Steve Nolan, Wayne Cornish, Steve Dymont, Tom Frank and Grog Van- Sickle. (Eigbt different boys scored.) Whitby played Gloucester's first team in the "A" champion- ship game. This Gloucester team has nover bast to a 'B' team this year and only to some 'A' teams. Ini the Nationals, Gloucester will be classified as a 'B' team. Whitby beat tbem 10 to 6. Rich Dyment scored 3 timos, Grog VanSickle scored twice, singles by Simon Lewis, Wayne Cornîsb, Steve Dyment, Dave Clarke, and Emery Campbell (seven dif- feront scorers). The team shows good balance with 10 boys hit- ting the mark in this tournament.
