WHITBY FEE PRESS,.WEDNESDAY,J LILY 21), 198 1, PAGE 15 Whitby's parks CONT'D [ROM PG. 14 is always an ongoing concern and a costly one. We, as taxpayers, can help ease the load and the costs by doing our share. In the past grass on town property which includes boulevards with the exception of Anderson Street which is a Regional Road and the firehalis, was ceut every ten days, now it is every 15 days. Many new areas, subdivisions, become overgrown while being developed. At this stage the builders or developers have an agreement with the town and it generally becomes their responsibility. Trees, especially young ones should be watered by home owners whenever the need arises or in the case of unoccupied buildings by the person concer- ned. This is most important in the early stages of growth to help the transplant process and te stabilize their well being. If residents see any sign 0f disease on trees please phone the department at once. This can often be stopped if caught in time'. This year there are caterpillars on the Mountain Ash trees which are eating away ail the leaves and their progress is speedy. We have had this problem and I think it is wide spread over most parts of southern Ontario but it can be stopped by rapid spraying.* on the subject of trees youngsters should be taught not te swing on tbem and bend them over; this can be fatal for the tree and in the meantime they must be replaced or sometimes staked. Vandalism is a serious matter and this applies to parks and recreation areas as welI as schools and other properties. Apart from the cost whicb is terribly high, how does $10,000 sound for material only or $4,500 for one repair job? These are princely sums believe me from the town's coffers, our money whieh could be put to bet- ter use. Washrooms on occasion have to be closed because of wanton destruction. As taxes go up and up a hait could be called, flot a eut but stopped entirely. Responsibility begins at home, flot in the school system nor in the market place but in the home. If parents were hit with a bill for $4,500 because their child or children wilfully destroyed Town property they might thînk twice before letting the same occur. The end resuit might be very different. Children should also be told that grafetti is a costly business with the cost of materials and labour. Why should the whole town suffer for the few who think, "what is yours is mine and to hell with decency and honesty? " Wayne asks that anyone who sees any type of destruction going on should immediately caîl in, then and there, not an hour later. If this was done on a regular basis it might stop or slow down the van- dalism. I shouldn't think many people want to be. caught. Children are certainly not the only offenders. Aduits do their share of stupid and foolish thîngs which takes men off their regular work to repair and fix up. An example, earth from a swimniing pool excavation put on parkland; think of the costs involved here with of course taxpayers' money. In 1982, the town hopefully will be divided into four parts when it cornes to upkeep and maintenan- ce 0f parks and recreation areas. This should sti- mulate some healthy competition. In 1982, horti.-ultural student.s will be hired for such work and the time element is important here as they will be available from May until September. As Wayne says, "Parks are for people"; the monies collected iur such are yours and mine, let's make good use of same. We are fortunate in having Wayne DeVeau as director of parks and recreation. Capable and creative he is giving us something to be proud of in Whitby. Let us ail give him the support he needs and thereby maintain the high standard of our parks and recreation areas. Mayor takling Whitby to Eaton Centre The Town of Whitby will be taking its promo- tional show to the Toronto Eaton Centre for a week beginning on August 10. In making the an- nouncement last week, Mayor Bob Attersley said that is part of the town's campaign to at- tract more industrial and residential develop- ment. Space for the show is being leased from the Ontario Ministry of In- dustry and Tourism and will feature two slide shows - one of Whitby and the other on Durham Region. Attersley said that promotional materials giving information about the town will also be available. The town will not have to pay to use the space in the Eaton Centre, At- tersley said adding that ail the town had to do to get it was to ask for it. "Any opportunity we get to promoête the town, we'I1 do it, " he said. The town bas been undertaking an aggressive promotion campaign this year in order to compete with those municipalities dloser to Metropolitan Toronto. "We have to fight for everything we get. We have to get the informa- tion out," Attersley said. The program seems to be enjoying some degree of success as At- tersley pointed out that during the first haîf of this year more resi- dential building permits have been issued than for ail of 198U. The display in Toronto should be a real atten- tion getter since it is being designed by the operator of the Cullen Gardens and Miniature Village, the mayor said. The show is being paid for out of a development promotion fund set up by five major residen- tial developers with projects with the Town of Whitby. Attersley said that they set up the fund because it is their belief that the town should be promoted if people and industry are going to locate here. The same show will be screened at the Eaton Centre can also be viewed on August 1 at the Iroquois Park Arena from 2 to 9 p. m.
