'I I Making a movie Hollywood came to Whitby last week as Insight Productions of Toronto used the downtown core as a loca- tion for an upcoming television documentary. The documentary, to be seen on the CBC Television Network next March, deals with the progression of Canadian pop music fromn the 1950's to the present day. In the photograph, actors are rehearsing a scene from a segment deaiing with Bobby Curtola, a prominent signer of the 1950's and early 1960's. His most famous recording was of a song entitled "Fortune Telier. " A spokesman for Insight Productions said that Whitby was chtsen for location shooting because of Star Records. The downtown shop looks like those found in the 1950's throughout Canada. "We're a Canadian company doing a Canadian production on Canadians," the spokesman said. The documnentary is being produced by John Brunton and lain Paterson. --Fe rs tf ht Canadian Tire gets rejected Whitby Town Councii ratified a decision made by its administrative committee and turned down a proposai that would have seen a Canadian Tire outiet built behind Bowman Ave. Council turned down a proposai by Jovial In- vestments Ltd. that would have seen the vacant lot behind Bownian Ave. developed not only to bouse the Canadian Tire outlet but a special pur- pose commercial facility as well. Area residents have given the plan strong opposition and turned out in large numbers to show their disapprovai at both the committee hearing and at couneil. Their opposition was based on the assumption that a Canadian Tire outiet does not fit into the defimition of speciai purpose commercial found in the Region of Durham's officiai plan. Counciliors reject Joviai's proposai even though the planning department had given its blessing. A spokesman for area residents recentiy toid the committee that discussion held with the region's planning department confirmed that t.he proposai does not fit with the speciai purpose commercial designation. Special purpose commnercial is to serve "those specialized needs of the residents on an occasionai basis.", The spiokesman also said that the designation requires "exposure to traffic," The proposed location for the Canadian Tire store was in %-the aorm-g ' thrnhaf f helo, WOSAV.
