The Peter Perry Award is an annual honor given by the chamber to Whitby's outstanding citizen of the year. The honor is named for Peter Perry, the man who is generally given the credit for establishing the Town of Whitby in the middle of the Iast century. The chamber will an- nounce the winner of this year's Peter Perry Award at a ceremony to be held on Thursday, July 23 in the Lambton Room of the Earl of Durham Restaurant on Brock Street South. This year's finalists are: Bonnie Berry, Joyce Cox, Benoit LaHaye and Henry Perry. Berry was nominated for her efforts that resulted in Whitby Town Council's recent decision to keep the Kinsmen outdoor pool on Chestnut Street open. Council had decided to close the pool on the grounds that it was too expensive to maintain and that it was gradually falling to beneath the standards establisbed by the Durham Region Board 0f Health. The Walnut Street resident formed an ad- hoc volunteer commit- tee of residents who not only petitioned to keep the pool open but agreed to belp in the repair work. "We just talked about it and decided we had to do something about it," Berry says. She is also involved in other community ac- tivities such as the Durham YMCA, Block Parents and Brownies. Berry is a former psychiatric nurse and is presently engaged in volunteer work at the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital. Joyce Cox has been nominated for the Peter Perry Award for her in- volvement. in such organizations as the Whitby branch of the Canadian Red Cross Society, the United Way, the Canadian Can- cer Society as well as the Whitby Psychiatric and Dr. J.O. Ruddy General Hospitals. t'or the last eight years, Cox has been the organizer of the blood donor climics held by the Red Cross. Having donated blood 17 times, she is a firm believer in it. "I firmly- believe in the importance of blood donor clinics, " she says. "Let's face it, we all' need (its services) at times. A lot of people just won't take the time. I was a blood donor for years and years, I felt it was important then and I think it's important now." Cox has been a resident of the town sin- ce 1947 and is, by profession, a teacher. During ber career she taught at what is now known as R.A. Sennett Public School as well as at King Street and E.A. Fairman public schools. She retired in 1973 but she still volunteers her time to play piano for the music classes at Sennett. Benoit LaHaye is af- fectionately known as "Uncle Benny" and is known not only throughout Whitby but througb many parts of Ontario and Quebec as well.
