Wlil'BY FRI-E PRESS, WFDNESDAY,JIJNE 10, '981, PAGE 1-3 Get out and give blood this month The reguldrly- scheduled Blood Donor Clinic wilI be held at the Legion Hall, Byron St. S., Whtby, Wednesday, June 17. The hours are from 2p. m. to 8p.m. To accommodate those who find it more convenient to give blood on t.heir way home from work, the clinic runs through the supper hour. As a resuit only haif the beds operate from 4 o'clock to 6 o'clock, 80 each mem- ber of the Red Cross crew from Toronto gets her entitled one hour mealtime break. Someone in Canada requires' blood or a blood product every minute day or night. L.ast year somne 350,000 people received the blood they needed to stay alive. Thanks to the thousands of blood donors and generous government support, Canadians receive the blood free of charge. Any healthy person between the ages of 18 and 65 may give blood. If you're 17, a letter of permission from a parent or guardian is required. The actual donation takes about 10 minutes. 'In addition, registration, a brief test, rest and snack take up about haif an hour. During the hours of the clinie, a mini-lab will be parked in front of the Legion Hall so the processing of-the blood can start almost im- mediately. Blood is made up of red celis which bring oxygen to the tissues and carry carbon dioxide to the lungs for removal. The white celis are the body's defence against bac- terial infection. The platelets st.art the dlot- ting process after an in- jury or operation. The straw-coioured fluid part of the blood is plasma, which is rich in vital nutrients. Many people are heard to say, -Yes, I really must become a blood donor, " and neyer get around ta' it. If you're one of those people, June 17, 1981 is a good time to get around to it. New bymlaw to aid purch asers Whitby Town Council has passed a bylaw that will make it mandatory for new home buyers to be informed about their subdivision. The bylaw, the brain- child of West Ward Councillor Joe Bugelli, states that developers will have to inform prospective purchasers of what is planned for the subdivision. This includes the types of homes to be constructed, the location of schools and when they are to be built, the location of commercial develop- ments as well as the construction schedule for parks, roads and landscaping. Bugelli said that his motion is aimed to asit the first time home buyer whe may not know what to look for when making.their purchase. "They are not aware of development agreements, site plan agreements, officiai pan designations, zoning and byIaws,"' he said. 'They buy their homes and then they find out that row housing or shopping- centres wiJl be built next to their houses," he said adding that theý pur- chaser is then owning property that might flot be worth what was paid for it. "The people then Classified Ads get the resuits you are Iooking for Cali 668-6111 come to council com- plaining," Bugelli said. "Unfortunately, ail we can say is you should have looked into it before you bought. " The councillor also said that the real estate agents and lawyers handling the sale of homes are only partially to blame for the problems encountered by home buyers. Real estate agents "6will only present homes in a good light in order to sell them,"~ Bugelli said.'
