The warehouse will be the biggest of iLs kind in Ontario and should employ about 200 people. Disaster planning seminar scheduled for the fali The Durham Region District Health Council is sponsoring a one day seminar in the faîl on Disaster Planning. 'l'ne focus of the seminar, to be chaired by Mayor Bill McLean of Ajax, a member of the district healt-hcouncil, will be on the nuclear plants in Pickering and planned for Darlington and their im- plications for evacuation and disaster planning. Last September, the health council ran a con- ference to look at medical disaster and evacuation planning with particular emphasis on the Mississauga rail and nur- sing home disasters. As a follow up it was decided recently to bring together the interested heaith and social services to review progress in developing local plans and to review the existing con- tingency plan for the Pickering nuclear power station. Officials of the district health council, Ontario Hydro, the ministries of health and the solicitor generai and the local Durham Region Emergency Control Office met last week to plan the event. Scheduled for Thursday, September 17 at the Town of Whitby municipal office, the legal responsibility for evacuation and a review of the off site Pickering con- ingency plan. In addition a review of the recent simulation of a nuclear leak at Pickering wiii be made. Special workshops are also being set up to look at radiation and its effeets on the body, evacuation 0f long term care facilities, hospital utilization and com- munications during a nuclear accident, municipal responsibiiity and control and one for the media and public information. Further details and registration for the con- ference will be made available in early August.
