Host'lityprevented early GOextension It wili be at least five years before Durham Region residents living east 0f Pickering will be able to board a GO Train for their daily commuter trip to Toronto's Union Station. Until the rail service is ex- tended eastward, those people living in Whitby will have to travel some eight miles to reach the train in Pickering either by bus or car. Rocking Headboi Dlning F Basswol Everyone seems to agree that the reason for this situation is the fact that when the extension was first proposed it received a hostile reception from local politicians - most notably in Oshawa. "Oshawa councillors were strongly opposed to the GO coming east" in the mid- 1970's, Whitby Mayor Bob Attersley said last week. 'We're paying for it now. Oshawa Regional Coun- cillor John Aker, who was a member of both city and regional councils at the time, said that local politicians were reluctant to have the service extended because they were afraid of becoming a bedroom com- munity for Metropolitan Toronto and because of the boom growth being ex- perienced. Aker noted that many of those politicians have since changed their minds and have become strong suppor- ters of the extension. Attersley is of the opinion that the GO extension east to Oshawa - through Whitby - would "certainly be a benefit" to the town. The mayor also says that the position that if GO was extended, Durham would become a bedroom com- munity for Toronto is wrong. " "They (the provincial government) turned it west and it didn't do that," he said. "It didn'thurt them." Attersley said that the regions where GO has been extended have experienced the kind of growth that Durham is after and have not become bedroom com- munities. Herrema said that the regions of Peel and Halton have always been suppor- ters of the GO Transit. Officials of the regional planning department have estimated that about 25,000 travel to Toronto each workday to work. 0f these, about 4,000 use the GO ser- vice. Herrema accounts for the recent change in attitude to the drop of development in the region and says that GO would be a boost to residen- tial and industrial develop- Sment. Should a decision be made to bring the service east, it would take at least five years before it would be operating. The decision to take GO to Milton was made in 1.975. However, Attersley says that the Town of Whitby will be doing some things ta make the use of GO more at- tractive. "lSomnewhere down the line, we will establish inter- connection between the GO system and the Whitby Transit Service," he said adding that he has already held talks on this matter with provincial government officials. Attersley said that such an interconnecting system would probably require the construction of a terminal, however, no plans for such a facility have been mnade. He also pointed out that it will take time to make these improvements to the local public transportation system. Attersley wants seat gui CONT'I) FROM PG. 1 situation can be reviewed," he said. "There should be some kind of yardstick that you ca n go by. " He also believes that the make-up of council should be reviewed by an independant body, rather than by council itself. "I would sooner have an independant body review Attersley also wants the basis of representation on council determined. He said delines that he does not know how council's composition is determined, whether it is by assessrnent, population or geographic area. "There are many questions on what is 'fair' representation," he said. The mayor is also con, fident that regional council will support the case for a review. "I don't see any problems in reviewing anything," he said. l1is V iEONuS t - Ic" /,Fee# Eu ssoEilEILD' GUARAHTEE mIb..foidSugtBdSd A* oe Sutegua- no w l w t tUonmbend n~ ft. fw - l"- "OiWum st 10 M da.w y=w ea f f lauffackgelot We Alo SpecoMehOin.
