EDITOR'S NOTE: In this week's edition of the Whitby Free Press we would like to introduce "The Voice Of The Turtle," by George Tauchnan, who will attempt to take the issues of the day and then treat thein in a humerous manner. We hope that our readers enjoy his "Pearls of Wisdom". "It is stupid of modern civilization to have given up believing in the devil when he is the only explanation of it (modern civilization)." Ronald Knox. "Democracy is a device that insures we shall be governed no better than we deserve." George Bernard Shaw. Before I plunge into the heart of my story, by way of an in- troduction of me to those who did not enjoy my writings when they appeared in another Durham Region newspaper, and some who read them and still did not (I have been known to cast pearls before swine), allow me a word of self- recommendation. My meaner critics notwithstanding, I would describe myself as: writer, artist, world traveller, highschool teacher, deep thinker, connoisseur of cheap booze, all 'round nice guy, and probably the most modest man that ever lived. In spite of all this, I am continually haunted by the in- credible amount of stupidity (my own readers excepted, of course) that dominates this planet. As the California guru, Dr. Fritz Perls, hath said, "Albert Einstein personally told me that there are only two things in creation that are infinite; the universe and human stupidity." Now I do not have a doc- torate in philosophy, nor even a master's degree in under- water basket weaving, but I am inexorably (irresistibly, even) drawn to the task of expanding the awareness of the masses so that we'll all be better prepared to forestall at least some of the lousy effects of corruption, hypocrisy, fanatic feuds and political pus that we have brought upon ourselves and that threaten our survival, and our health even. Today, enlightenment in Whitby, perhaps tomorrow, the world! For every Doctor Strangelove on this plant of the apes, many thousands of common people can strangely be found to worship Strangelove and vote for him to be president. Now I've lived in several corners of the earth, learnt several languages and tried many living styles before I chose Canada as'the best country to live in, this side of Utopia. This doesn't change the fact that the wonderfulness of Canada must never be taken for granted. There are many dangers lurking today that portend potentially ill tidings for our future, e.g. acid rain, the proliferation of dangerous food ad- ditives, plummeting Canadian living standards, the KKK, Ronald Reagan, General Alexander Haig, Joe Clark, Bill Davis, the Whitby sewer outlet, and many other symptoms of chaos. So, gentle reader, if you are interested in the struggle to fend off Orwell's nightmare predictions for 1984, send me your ideas on saving the world and I will try to honour you in print as long as you are not racist, religiously fanatic or otherwise contravene any of my particular prejudices. A spokesman for the Toronto planning consulting firm that is conducting the study told the residents that public meetings are still needed before any proposal to change the Port is in the planning stages. Peter Walker of MacPher- son, Walker, Wright Associates Limited presen- ted a plan for the community that was virtually un- changed from proposals submitted at three earlier public meetings. The proposal for future development is centred on harbor oriented recreation and industrial uses. The population of the Port would be increased by 5,000 to 7,000 in low density housing surrounding in- creased commercial ac- tivity on Brock Street South. Industrial development would be encouraged at Charles and Front Streets as well as on those lands east of Brock and Dufferin Streets including the construction of a small hotel on the north- west corner of the marina. Another recommendation calls for the closure of the Whitby Jail to allow for fur- ther residential develop- ment. The study also proposes that an open space corridor be established along the Pringle Creek to the east of the development. "We have to stress that nothing we are planning will happen overnight," Walker said. "We think these types of proposals will bring value to the land in the Port."
