That was the reaction of Whitby Mayor Bob Attersley and Ajax Mayor Bill MeLean after the region's management committee voted to recommend to courcil that the province not be asked to give the two municipalities additional councillors. Both Attersley and McLean have said that their municipalities are under- represented at regional council. At today's meeting of regional council, the two men are expected to put for- th a notice of motion that will ask regional council to request the Ontario Ministry of Intergovernmental Af- fairs to conduct a review of the representation on Durham Regional Council. The motion will be discussed in two week's time, if it is accepted as a notice of motion. Attersley and McLean both feel that a provincial review would give both municipalities an additional member on the second-tier government. Brock Mayor AI McPhail, vice-chairman of the management committee, said that the present representation on council is fair. Before the represen- tation was changed it would have to be proved unfair to both regional council and the province. Attersley counters this argument saying that the fairness of the situation can- not be determined because it is not known why it was set up this way in the first place. At present, Durham Regional Council is com- posed of 30 councillors and the chairman. The largest delegation is that from Oshawa which has 11 mem- bers; Newcastle and Pickering have four; Whitby three; and Ajax, Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge each have two apiece. Attersley maintains that both Whitby and Ajax are under-represented on the basis of both population and assessment. Whitby's population is 35 000 and sends three Charges against a young -man as a result of a fatal three vehicle accident were dropped last week in Whitby county court. Whitby, Ajax want province to determine make-up of council representatives to regional council. Newcastle sends four and has a population of 32,000. Whitby also pays a larger share of the regional tax levy than does the Town of Newcastle. Ajax sends two represen- tatives to regional council with a population of 23,000. Brock's population is 9,500 and also has two regional councillors. Ajax's share of the regional levy is also larger than that of Brock. Whitby mai However, McPhail said that the physical area the municipality covers is con-' sidered as well as population and assessment when determining representation. Brock Township is second in land area to that of Newcastle, the largest of the region's eight member municipalities. McLean said that provin- cial reviews of the make-up of York and Niagara Regional Councils have resulted in changes. n cleared on negligence charge
