Superstition is an irrational fear of the unknown or the mysterious and often related to religious matters. It is dif- ficult to find a large or rather tall building with a floor num- bered thirteen so we find these ideas take a great hold and die hard. Walking under a ladder is another one, no doubt well foun- ded because no one would want to be caught under a falling ladder or have a paint can catapult through the air and hit them on the head. A likely happening so it is quite wise to warn children not to walk under ladders, not because it is bad luck but because they might have the misfortune of being hurt. On the other hand, apart and far away from superstition is a phenomenon, something that appears or is perceived, often an extraordinary thing, not always easy to explain and often recognized in the spiritual world. As times goes on we are told by reliable sources that there may be a world beyond and that the spirit lives on. Some people are more finely tuned, others may have "second" sight and still others are more able to use their inner consciousness and often feel and see things beyond the scope of most of us. Do you remember the old song about the grandfather clock and how it stopped when the "old man" died? There are many such stories and who can deny them? We remembered that song this week while having tea with an old friend as we talked about an incident which had hap- pened in her home a long time ago. A dear little old lady had given her a very heavy, large ash tray when she was married. I had often used this ash tray and upon occasion moved it on the coffee table but this could only be done by lif- ting it as it was so heavy. Sound and sturdy it had rested on that table intact until the little old lady died. At that precise time the ash tray split in half, a clean cut. Coincidence, maybe, but most unlikely. Yesterday, I came across an old, silver cruet stand with spaces for five cut glass bottles and their stoppers. Two per- fect bottles remain but the other three were badly broken and thrown out. The stand is well over 100-years-old and the story which follows happened in England about 40 years ago. This silver piece was always kept in the dining room on the sideboard, a good foot or more from the edge. One day my husband's wife and the maid were standing in the dining room when to their utter amazement the cruet stand started to move and worked its way over the edge and hit the floor with quite a thud. Speechless and spellbound neither one of them moved; they just stared at the broken glass. When my husband came home from the office and had been told what had happened he made a thorough investigation. He moved it to the edge of the sideboard but it would not top- ple over of its own accord because the bottom end of the spin- die pertruding through the base of the stand caught in a groove on the edge of the sideboard. When it had moved alone one of the feet had made a three inch scratch in the wood as it travelled. My husband tried to reproduce the scratch by exerting downward pressue on the stand but was unable to make any mark at all. Even though it had sustained some damage because of the fall it was put back on the sideboard in its original place. Two months later Robin's wife was alone in the dining room and CONFUSED BY TAXES? One could go on and on and tell the story about a small child, who comes back and sits at the foot of a bed and then after a time suddenly disappears. However, it is upsetting to many people who laugh in derision or scoff at the mere mention of such. Each to his own but generally it is wise to keep an open mind about many matters. Who knows? It could happen to you at some point in time. ..~ \ IJIJ ~uIU~muLI % ir tu tvwt%*, J*ldlwVt I5.DT'DJ Supers tition the same thing happened once again. No scratch this time but there was considerable damage to the other pieces of glass. The pieces were picked up and put away and of course there never was a repeat of this performance because it was packed away in a box. The piece was owned by her gran- dmother and handed down to her daughter who had recently passed away and had left it to her daughter. My husband has a large, very heavy walnut chest which is about 300 years old, hand made and worn with age. Again, the following happened in England. The chest was kept against a wall and above it hung a riding crop. At night often a loud thump or smack would be heard and they would find the heavy chest across the room and the riding crop on top of it. During the present generation this performance has not been repeated and from the time it was moved out of the house and put in another it stayed in one place. I have heard so many stories of this kind over the years and wish I had written them down. Generally highly intelligent people who relate them, never yet emotional or excitable ones. A few years ago I met a couple from Whitby who had all sorts of occurances happening in their otd home, doors opening and closing, that sort of thing. It seems these things happen after a sudden death or maybe a murder. Possibly this means that a spirit lingers Milo
