Because the land is zoned medium den- siLy is no reason to have lots of 30 and 35 feet. The protection of the largest single investment the average man makes is an important factor in turning down this development proposai and others like it. As a for instance, the Brooklin agreement states, "The first five hundred and fifty (550) homes shahl have lots with a fron- tage of 70 feet, unless at the sole discretion of counicil, this rnay be reduced at the time of negotiating the sub-division agreement." In my opinion, allowing:30 foot lots now would pave the wav for such reductions. As chairînan of the Mayoir's' Task For-ce for the Disabled, I amn kept busy; it is a gigantic task, but the involvement of so many people in the community makes it much lighter a task. 1 arn overwhelmed at the publie response towards this projeet, and in my next column 1 will devote more space to it, I am also one of the council representatives on the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA>. Heber Down and Lynde Shores are two CLOCA holdings within Whitby. I hope town residents will take advantage of these two beautiful areas which are there for their use. For infor- miation on what these conservation areas have to offer, cal 579-0411. Home building hias taken wings in the past month or so, and indications are that this trend will continue for some time, the best guess being thiat the boom will continue three years. With the General Motors of Canada purchase of the Firestune factory, the sale of the Dundas parking lot, Whitby Mail and K-Mart expansion, it looks as though the town lias turned a corner. Certainly the overali picture regarding growth is rnuch brighter than it was in November and December of 1980. I firmiy Ottawa LU PM's speech good but it was wrong No doubt many of you have read about Prime Minister Trudeau's speech to the House of Commons on bis favourite subject, the constitution. Some have described it as the best speech of bis political career and perhaps it was. It was cer- tainiy weli deiivered. But'it was also so wrong. About almost. everything. 1 find particularly offensive bis views on three mnatters; God, property rights, and the Charter of Rights. The Prime Minîster paid lip service to God in his speech but he has nevertheless excluded ail reference to Him in the constitution's preambie. Perhaps it is Mr. Trudeau's desire that man, and especialiy himself, wiii be the Aimighty. The aberration described grandiy as a charter of rights wili not even give Canadians the rights that this country en- dorsed in the Universal Charter of Rights of the United Nations. For exampie, it does flot protect property rights, it does not protect women's rights, it leaves our native people in the same untenable position they've been in for centuries, and it fa ils to protect unborn chiidren. The property rights ommission, demanded from the government by the NDP to ensure their support, is frightening. We have been fortunate in this country to attract people from many nations of the world such as the Baitic nations, the eastern European communities, and Italy to name a few. What rights were ieft to these people when their countries were taken over by dictatorships? What rights are ieft to any people when a tyranny is in control? There is not one totalitarian country that provides for property rights and there is not one free country that excludes property rights. These giaring inadequacies are obvious to many - even some Liberai MPs. Perhaps this expiains the Prime Minister's need to invoke closure on debate of bis con- stitutional measures.
