If last year your house was assessed at $5,000 your total taxes would have been $901. The breakdown would be: Public School $23050 High School 188.50 Region 154.50 Garbage Collection 18.00 Transit '7.00 General Government 3W.00 Total $90650 There is a $5.50 rebate from the region which of course means your total tax bill would be $901. As can be seen the total arnount the town receives is $333 and from that amount we look after parks, arenas, snow ploughing, garbage pick-up, transit, firefighting, planning, clerks department, finance department,. roads, sidewalks, storm sewers, salaries and all the everyday things it takes to run a town. Even though the town acts as tax collector, we have no input on thie other $568 that makes up the $901 total. Your assessment is done by the provincial assessnient department whose office is in the regional building on Rossland Road. Our planning department is presently involved in a special study of Port Whitby, we are also contemplating a special study of the Thickson-Dundas area. 1 frankly believe that the planning departmnent had to spend so much time on the Brooklin Study, areas like these were put on the long finger. This year has been narned by the United Nations as the Year of the Disabled. Mayor Attersley has appointed me the Chairman of the Task Force for the disabled. It's a challenge I arn pleased to accept. We will be holding our first meeting on February 26 at t.he Town Hall. Pîçase consider this an invitation to attend and get involved. I t.hink you will agree it's ime we started to rehabilitate our thinking toward the disabled. I enjoy council even though sometimes it gets pretty frustrating, however, one must take the bitter with the sweet. If I can be of any help to you, please caîl.
