The ABCs of Select ing Your Diamond On your first date, you might have felt slightly awkward, but by the sec- ond you were laughing and holding hands, and within a short time you began feeling more and more comfortable with each other until a special intimacy had grown be- tween you and it seemed natural that you would be married. As wonderful as those days af new love and planning a life together are, says the Jewelry In- dustry Council, don't be in such a daze that yau make the wrong decision when buying a diamond. The engagement ring is flot as easy ta select as it is ta wear, and though each stone may seem luxuriaus and elegant ta the inex- perienced shopper, each diamond is actually di fifer- ent. Because diamonds vary in quality, you should purchase yours from a reputable jeweler who can offer expert advice. But, it is equally essential that you know the "four C's" as they are referred ta by Ring Are" jewelers-cut, color, clani- ty and carat weight which will help you judge the quality af the gem that is to bring you a lifetime of happiness. Cut refers bath to the shape of the diamond-be it the popular, round bnil- liant, the rectangular em- erald, pear, heart, oval, or boat-shaped marquise- and to the skill and preci- sion of the cutting. To re- lease maximum brilliance, a diamond must be cut according ta strict stand- ards. A full cut diamond has 58 facets: 33 above the girdie or auter edge and 25 below. A perfect cut refers flot to the number of facets (that is standard), but ta their angles and the pro- portions of the stone. Believe it or flot, diamonds are so hard that it takes several days ta cut and polish a one carat stone. Color is thought by some ta be the most im- partant determinant af diamond value. The ideal diamond is crystal clear as a raindrop. But, such ~Four C's" stanes are rare. Most are tinged with yellow or brown. And, while this tinge might detract from the diamond's value, it usually doesn't diminish the stone's spectacular sparkle. CIarity refers ta the dia- mond's internai quality. A flawless diamrond shows no "inclusions" when viewed under ten power magnificatian. Ninety- nine per cent af diamronds aver hall a carat have somne flaws. They range fram a tiny white spot ta dark carbon spots, nicks, cracks, or cloudy areas. Like a slight tinge of colon, inclusions leçisen a diamand's -va'ue but seldomn detract irom their beauty. Ask your jeweler ta let you look at somne diamonds under his ten power loupe. You will be able ta see the small specks that make each stone duf- ferent and unique. CaratY of course, is the measure oi the weight af the diamond. A carat equals l/142nd ai an ounce, or twa hundred milligrams. Each carat is divided into 100 points, thus a ½/ carat diamond weighs 50 points. The word "carat" co'rnes from the carob-sePIwhich was sa unifarm in weight that it was used ta weigh dia- monds. If there are one large and several smaller stones in a ring, ask your jeweler for the exact weight ai the majar stane, rather than total carat weight. Every point affects value.
