Tbe Durham West Progressive Conservative Association will hold tbeir nomination meeting at the Ajax Higb School, at 8 p.m. tomorrowv (February 5). Ashe was first elected as the Durham West MPP in 1977 wben be defeated the then incumbent NDP mem- ber Charles Godfrey. During bis almost four- year tenure in the provincial legislature, Ashe bas served as tbe parliamentary assistant to botb the Treasurer of Ontario and the Minister of Intergovernmen- taI Affairs. He presently serves as parliamentary assistant to Robert Welch, minister of energy. ,Ashe is a former mayor of East Ward Councillor Joe Drumm lost bis bid to over- turn a proposed amendment to tbe Durham Official Plan that will designate a 60-acre parcel in nortb east Whitby as industrial land. At its meeting last week, Wbitbv Town Council passed a recommendation that will advise the region's planning department that it bas no ob- jection to an amendment to the official plan in a section of town bordered by Tbickson Road North, tbe Osbawa-Whitby townline, Rossland and Taunton Roads. Tbe amendment will provide. for housing a population of about 9,000 as well as the 60-acre industrial section. Tbe proposai also cails for a new east-west arterial road for tbe area. "I've got no objections to an arterial road down tbe line," Dr'umm told council. "Wbat really troubles me is the whole idea of giving land another status. " "Sixty acres of industrial land is not a lot," he con- tinued. "But everyone has tbe idea tbat tbis land must be serviced. When the matter was first brought up at a council meeting three weeks ago, Drumm attacked it saying that the region shouid be making an effort to seli already serviced industrial land in the south end of town before opening up new areas. However, other coun- cillors expressed opposition to bis view saying that it was a good business practise to give potential industrial concerns a cboice of location.
