WHITBY FREE PRESS International >'ear of the Disabled Person Town won tignore needs of disahled The Town of Whitby will give more than token sup- port to the United Nations International Year of the Disabled Person according to Mayor Bob Attersley. "We will start taking an inventory immediately to see what we have and what we need," Attersley said. "Now that I've had a look at the problenis in a wheelchair, I can under- stand what disabled people are up against. " The mayor spent 14 hours in a wheelchair last week and said that his biggest problem was planning how to get from place to place properly. "I was mentally tired because I had to keep thinking about getting froni one place to another. It's not easy. " Attersley has alread called for better transpor- tation for the community's handicapped including requesting the Rotary Club to think about raising funds for another Handi Transit van. He has also said that he would like to see ramps for wheelchairs installed at the Four Corners. However, Attersley re- emphasized the need to take an inventory. "When we have that, we will start finding out what money is available to use from the different levels of government, " he said . Another necessary item, Attersley said, was a lift at the pool in the Iroquois Park Complex to enable disabled people to swim. However, the item costs about $30,000. He added that East Ward Councillor Joe Drumni will head a new committee that will undertake a study to see what can be done for the disabled in the town. Drumm is a former mern- ber of the Oshawa and District Cerebral Palsy Parent Council. "Our only goal," Drumrn said, 11to begin with will be to make the people of Whitby more aware of the needs of the disabled. " "l'Il be getting a number of people together and they11 be people who care and know the problems." 450 g pkg.
