The day has been officially proclaimed a special day by Whitby Town Council, to commemorate the 125th Anniversary of Henry Street School, predecessor to King Street School, and dedication of R.A. Sennett Publie Sehool. .The programs will include the open house from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m-. with special cere- mon les at 2 p.m. Tea will -be srvd by school mothers from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Many former pupils, teachers, 'principal of the ýresent King Street School, who taught there 31 years, and for whom, the school will be renamed; The mayor and former pupil, Jim Gartshore, ,MPP -George Asbe and MP Scott'Fennel plan to b e present. "Olden Golden Rule Days", about Whitby's education, was writteni bya group 0îf tea- chers under chairman Kay Hutchings as a 196 centen- niai projeet and has'been reprinted for this occasion. Gordon Coates, present principal of King Street Sehiool has 'prepared a special history of the first 125 years of education on the Hlenry Street King Street site. In 1854, to attend Henry Street Corumon School cost 1 shilling, -3 pence a month. The school onperated 12 months a year. The boys and girls attented anywhere from one to twelve months a year, just s0 long as their parents paid. It was the duty of the schoo! trustees to colledt'the fees. On display in MW. Paul Keerstead's Grade 6-class- room will be a model one- room log cabin schoolhouse.
