"We're not totally in control of our destiny in Canada," the rookie progressive conservative MP for Ontario riding'said. But the real issue was energy and Fennell came out to defend and expand upon Primi Minister Joe Clark's govern- ment's policies on the issue which he says has been upper most in the minds of every one in Ottawa- "We have to find renewable energy sources," Fennell said adding that conservation was just a part of the new minority government's plan to make this country energy sulf-sufficient. Fennell said the Tory government's air to make Canada energy sulf-sufficient by the year 1990. On the issue of conservation Fennell said that "Pieople will have to feel their pockets before they'll save more." As the shoitage of*energy grows he said that there will have to be a change in our lifestyles:by switching to smaller cars and forgoing other things that were taken for granted in the previously experienced energy rich world. "We'll follow the U.S. in car sizing,' he said. Fennell also accused the U.S. of wasting Canadian energy. The proposal for an energy common market between the U.S., Canada and Mexico is "a wonderful idea for the Americans," he said. ,*'It will pernit them to use our gas,'and waste even more and more of Canadian fuel," he said. "Canada's built on cheap energy, abundant energy and abundant natural resources," he·said. "We have got to hang on to it." Fennell said that the Tory government will be putting millions and millions of dollars into research to find renewable energy resources in the coming years. As a sideline to the energy issue, Fennell rejected the claim that oi company profits are continually getting bigger. "Profits are going up as the dollar goes down," he said. Fennell said that dollar wise profits seem to be larger as a gross value but said that the value of a dollar decreases the actual profit. "The dollar isn't worth a dollar'," he said. Fennell says that the Tory's campaign pledge to dump IPetro-Can is firm and will be carried out although he could not specify when it will happen. Fennell did say that might stilI be a role for the controversial crown corporation. "I can see Petro-Can as a funder of research," he said. '-f)ur goal was to get the government out of private industry," he said, "to get them (Petro-Can) out of direct competition".with the private oil producing industry. Fennell said that this policy of getting government out of business will also apply to other crown corporations such as Air Canada. Another topic of discussion at the meeting was Canada's military strengh. 'Our whole defence system has just been let go," he said. Fennell said that because of Canada's wealth in natural resources, energy and agriculture the country needs a defence system capable of fending off potential aggressors. He said that the Tory pledge to increase the manpower of the Canadian Armed Forces will be honored but where the real increase will be militia and other reserve forces. Fennell said, however, that the funding for these improve- ments will have to be diverted from other sources. Fennell said that one idea would be to train young people for a year in the forces and then return them to civilian life as reservists. He said this could be done by taking the $7,500 per year paid to unemployed people under the Unemployment Insurance Plan using that money to train militiamen.
