WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 1979, PAGE 9 Marina to be ful by June Whitby will try to attract people to the marina, on the one hand, and try to keep them out on the other. The town has published a brochure to attract people to the new marina and intends to build a fence around the facility. The marina and neigh- bouring (or rather surround- ing) harbor are being fea- tured in a two-page centre- fold in the-brochure entitled 'Whitby - We Mean Busi- ness'. The brochure contains photographs of the marina and of the operation as part of a campaign to ensure, as Mayor Jim Gartshore says, "the marina will be oversub- scribed by next June." Presently, 80 of the 400 eventual slips have been ren- ted. However, it appears as though the rise in the num- ber of boatmen as also intro- ducad a similiar flow of speeding drivers. The fenice is meant to slow those drivers down. The operations committee recommended to council, September 4, that it accept a staff proposal to build the six foot high chain-link fence along the south side of Watson Street, "We are experiencing speeding by a few inconsiderates.' The first consideration was speed bumps along the road, however, that was ruled out when it was disco- vered that they would be too difficult to maintain on a gravel road. Another consideration was controlled entrances but while this would provide security for the marina staff said it would not "help con- trol traffic or winter storage." Gartshore said that he was pleased with the rate the slips are being rented and that 80 per cent of them are from within the region, was admirable. 'I suggest to yôu that the marina is going to be over- looked by next June," he told the committee. While '"they will be compe- titive with others in the area," Gartshore said that the reates will be going up next year. The rates for winter sto- rage will range from bet- ween $2.25 to $9.50 depending on the type of storage. Summer rates from May to October, 1980 will be $16 a foot. The year-round rate will be $24 a foot with $2 a foot added for hydro. According to the latest figures, up until July 26 a total of $856,669 has been spent on the marina. It's budget (drawn up in Novem- ber, 1977) gave an estimated total cost of $1,063,000 Scott Fenneil, MP Fennel speaks CONT'D FROM PACE 8 Military equipment would also have to make inCanada, or at least at considerable percentage of it so that this industry and technology will have "potential export value down the road." Fennell indicated that such programs would help to make the Canadian Armed Forces self-furíding to a degree over the long-term. On campaign promises Fennell said, "we will live up to all the committments that we made during the election Fennell explained that the reason the Tory government might seem slow in bringing these promises about was, "we are trying to figure out where we are going." He did admit þowever, that the Tory's did make one impossible promise. That was the prbposed move of the Canadian embassy in Isreal from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. But the Tory's did learn something from that experience Fennell-said. "You don't come out with impromptu promises," he said noting that the proposal was a "spur-of-the-moment" idea. On being a member parliament, Fennell said that "It's like going back to school and getting your doctorate." "It's given men an opportunity to expand my horizons," he said. Fennell said that representing this riding has been a real learning experience and never realized how much work and study was involved in the job. "During the election I was an expert on everything, now I'm an expert on nothing," Fehnell said pointing out that·the more you know about something the more you come to realize how much you really don't know. Fennell gave credit to his 7,000 vote election win to the press and thanked them for their efforts. "You guys got me elected - putting it bluntly," he said. "You did a fantastie job."
