Free Press Photo Ruddy Hospital reports good year The Dr. J.O.XRuddy Gene- ral Hospital, which held its annual meeting recently, reports it had a good year in 1978-79, despite government constraints. The Hospital managed to stay within its budget, with an operating expense for the year of $3,816,000. The total revenues for the year were $3,573,000, leaving a deficit of $243)io which consists lar- gely of depreciation expeises which were not funded by the provincial gov- ernment. The statistics for 1978-79 as far 'as patient days are con- cerned and other hospital activity were about the same as for the year 1977-78 with the exception of the emerg- ency department which con- tinues to show an increasing trend of use. About 1,000 more patients were seen in the emergency department in 1978-79 then in the previous year. The Hospital Auxiliary re- ported that they donated approximately $8,000 for the purchase of operating room equipment. The Auxiliary has recently changed its name from the Women's Hospital Auxiliary to the Hospital Auxiliary. This will mean that the title will be more suitable should men decide to join the auxil- iary. In 1978-79 the main sources of revenue for the auxiliary were the Blossom Ball and gift shop sales. The new steam plan has been installed and is now in operation, the hospital board reports. The plant consists of two boilers with a PSI rating of 150 maximum. It's capacity is 134 thermo-hours. It is classified as a "guard- ed" plant, which'means that a stationary engineer does not have to be in the power plant at all times. although stationary engineers are required to maintain the boilers. This type of boiler plant is considered more economical as it does not require as much manpower for main- tenance. The president of the Board of Governors of the D'r. J.O. Ruddy Hospital is now a member of the Hospital Ad- visory Committee of the Dis- trict Health Council. The committee is compo- sed of presidents of the boards of the six hospitals in Durham Region.
