PAGE 2, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6, 1979, WHITBY FREE PRESS John Smith honored for 25 years of service to St. Mark's During the Sunday morning service at St.M ark 's United Church Rev.. C.R. Wragg made a special announcement. He said the congregation was invited to the Sanctuary for an afternoon event and the Church Board wanted "the Congregation to be present." The afternoon event was presided over by Omer Edgeley in the absence of Neil Murkar, who had been rushed to the Hospital a few days prior to the Sunday events, "with a heart condition." Mr. Edgeley then began the program by saying that this is an Anniversary for John and Muriel Smith who have been with St. Mark's ",United Church Congregation in Whitby for 25 years. He told the almost filled church that the "Board felt that the occasion couldn't be let go by without some celebration." Mr. Edgeley read a letter of greetings from Rev. George Tuttle, Moderator of the United Church of Canada. In his letter of greetings to Rev. Smith and his wife the Rev. Tuttle said, "it is a rare thing that anyone can cele- brate 25 years in one place with one congregation." Rev. Harold Wilson of St. Mark's Church, Peterbo- rough brought greetings and congratulations to Rev. Smith and Mrs. Smith from the Bay of Quinte Confer- ence," as they mark this great milestone in the Ministery." Rev. Wilson said "being a quarter of a century at one congregation is a great mile- stone. Particularly when so many ministers serve on an average of five years in a congregation; some don't even unpack their suitcases. Part of this celebration today is that of a team...that is what the ministery is..it is sharing." The pew in which Rev. Smith, his wife and family sat was marked by two red roses backed by silver foiu- age bound by a silver ribbon which commenorated the Smith's silver anniversary with the-Whitby St. Mark's congregation. It said that "25 years ago the congregation of St. Mark'swas blessed when you (Rev. Smith) took charge of St. Marks." He and the Board hoped that the congregation's "tangible evidence of esteem would be accepted." At this point Mrs. Olive Hill presented Rev. and Mrs. Smith with an envelope. Mr. Edgeley then ex- pressed the hope that Rev. and Mrs. Smith would- "use the cheque as they wished and that they would use at least part of the cheque to spend as they wished as they take a "trip of your choice anywhere and anytime and that you will return, againno us at St M ark's" The amazed and deeply touched Smiths couldn't speak for a few moments then Rev. Smith for serving on "a difficult committee in the Town with sensitivity. The Town itself is better for your 25 years of service in this Town." Mayor Gartshore then wished Rev. and Mrs. Smith "the best in the future." The congregation then ad- journed to the Church Hall where Rev. Smith and Mrs. Smith received more than 300 members of the congre- gation. Anglican churches vs 1lit new areas More greetings were received as the honoured couple cut the 25th Anniver- sary cake and the members of the congregation signed the huge 25th Anniversary Service book, Rabies clinic is on June 14 A Rabies clinic for dogs and cats four months of age or older will be held Thurs. June 14 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Ajax Community Centre Arena. Ail pets should be on a leash, and proceeds will be donated to charity. Newcomers spend so much time on the road commuting to and from Metro that it takes time to find Whitby's churches. TwoAnglicanparishes are combining efforts in June to acquaint newcomers with Whitby's many churches. Concern is being expressed for children and young people* because both churches in the visitation have good programmes underway. In pairs, young, people from St. John's and All Saints' Anglican churches in Whitby will visit every home in two new subdivisions. Their purpose will be to indentify the ways in which the churches can meet the religious needs of new- comers in both Otter Creek and College Downs.
