The Committee received a report from the planning staff which pointed out that King Street Sehool is planning a 125th anniversary celebration and reunion on Saturday, September 29. It is hoped that a great many formier teachers and pupils will plan to attend. 1'lere has been a school on the present King Street site since 1854. One Sunday in 1920, when plans for the present building were well on the way, the former Ftenry Street Schoolhouse m ysteriously burned. Classes had to carry on in chui'ch halls and various local 'ons around town until the present building was opened in 1921. The first principal of the new school was R.A.Sennett, who is now retired, and living in Brooklin. Program plans for Sept. 29 are being made by. an active committee. Councilior Barry Evans agreed with the neighbours of the Ivanic Court and Bradley Drive area and their objections to a higher build- ing where people on the upper leveis could "look down on the private homes." Councillor Evans said that "ta retirement home is des- ireable in that location." He beiieved that a iower type building would be more agreeable as "four storeys is too high and wiii be a deter- rent to the appearance of the area." He '"would sooner see a develop- ment like this (the retire- ment home) than row hous- ing; but at a lower height."1 He said he would sooner see the proposed develop- ment than row housing as "it would be better for the neighborhood than row housing," in tus opinion. He wondered if the height of -the building could be aitered "to a lower and more acceptable level." Councilior Evans put forth a motion that the retirement home be approved in princi- pie but alter the height to a aceeptable level so, it could be acceptable to the people already there. The Committee passed the motion with the various memnbers saying that the Committee "is trying to look at the concerns of the peopie, that the height does bottier them," and requested a "f urther__report in two weeks."
