The site plan application by Winter Garden Holdings Gas removal tender let The Town of Whitby last week awarded a tender of $114,000 for a gas extraction system for the Hopkins Street Industrial Park. Tripp Construction was awarded the tender in an effort to dlean up dangerous methane gas produ ced by a former landfill site in the middle of the industrial park. The contract Will involve, installation of a network of pipes attached to an exhaust system which will release the potentially dangerous vapors into the air. According to Public Works Director Dick Kuwahara, the action is necessary. because gas began showing up in the walls of a commer- cial building located beside the former dump. Seven units of the multi- tenant building at 111 Indus- trial Drive have had prob- lems with gas, he said. He emphasized however that the problem is confined to the outer walls and "lis net a dangerous concentration." Last week, Planning Director Kevin Tunney caught council by surprise by submnitting his resigna- tien after two and-a-half years at the job. Mr. Tunney, 32, said he had ne problems in dealing with the town council, but had been offered a position with a major North Ameni- can development firm, which he decided to accept. At the end of April he will become land manager for Cadillac-Fairview Ltci a large development cern- pany, which has land hold- ings in Whitby. Mr. Tunney graduated from Waterloo Lutheran Un- iversity in 1970, and since then has worked only with Whitby's planning Depart- ment, first a planning techni- cian, than as a planner, deputy directer and planning director, a jobS he took on after he succeeded Keith Birch in the early fail of 1976. Mr. Tunney said he wanted to broaden his horizons and learn some of the planning concerns from the develo- per's point of view. He said he considered his new job an epportunity which he could net afford to turn down. Mayor Jim Gartshore said a meeting will be held within the next week te decide on a replacement for Mr. Tunney.
