WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14e 1979, PAGE 3 Mike Burgess is appointed Chamberpresident Mike Burgess, owner of MBM Publishing .and Photography Inc. and pub- lisher of the Witby Free Press, was appointed Pres- ident of the Whitby Chamber of Commerce March 8. Mr. Burgess succeeds John Roberts who was eleet- ed president at the Chamber's annual meeting last November. Mr. Roberts recently had a change in bis business which will necessitate a lot of travelling, and be felt that he would flot be able to do tbe Chamber justice as presi- dent, said Mr. Burgess. Mr. Roberts bas ,resigned ,as president and from the board of directors. Mr. Burgess has been a member of the Chamber for about six years,, and bas served on the board of direct- ors since 1975. Ho has held thepositions of second and first vice-president, and worked on a nuniber of committees. In 1976 he headed'up the Chamber's committee to keep the' Whitby police' station open, when the Region of Durham was con- sidering closure of the station. He bas also been bead of tbe Chamber's pro- gram committee. Mr. Burgess has been in- volved in numerous com- munity organizations in Whitby. He is president of tbe Durbami Region branch of the Ontario Humane Society, member of the Whitby Retail Merchants' Association, President of the Durham Cultural Foundation and a member of' the Wlhitby Property 'Standards, ME BUJRGESS Committee. Mr. Burgess is a past- president of the Whi'tby Jaycees, past vice-president of the Corridor Area Rate- payers Association, former dinector of the Canadian Cancer Society, and found- ing president of Athol Green Co-operative Homes. 'II think basically that we've had a good stant to the year under the leadership of John Roberts, and I don't see any drastic changes in the Chamber's plan of action for the remainder of the year," said Mr. Burgess. "lWe have a number of events planned and we will carry through on them," he said. These include the County Town Carnival trade fair,. Peter Perry Award dinner and the information booth, which may be moved to Centennial Park thîs year to be more visible 'for vehicular traffic. A major event planned for June il, is a visit to' the Whitby .Chamber 'by Ontario's Lieutenant- Governor Pauline McGibbon, wbo will be the guest speaker for the month. "The Chamber will con- tinue to strive not only as the voice of the business, corn- munity but for the botter- ment of Whitby as a whole," said'Mr. Burgess. "What is good for Whitby is good for tbe business community. As a resident and also a businessmnan in Whitby, my desires.to im- prove the business climate have to also be for the betterment of the rosidents of this town. Tbe chamber has an obligation to serve al businesses in Whitby, includ- ing retail and industrial alike." Mr. Burgess said tbe Chamber bas to take a broader perspective to tryto serve the whole of tbe business community, incld- ing retail business, pro-, fessionials, commercial developments and industry.
