PA GE 12, WEDNJESDAY, JANUARY 31,199WHBYFE PRESS -Community meeting place is sought Recreational opportunites in the community for dis- charged patients from the Whitby Psychiatrie Hospital are riot that easy to find, say members of the hospital's recreation staff, so therefore they are attempting to find a community meeting place for these patients. Kay Wikholm and Jennifer Gray have spent the two and a haîf months looking for a place in Whitby where 30 men and women aged 20 to 60 I can meet and take part in an activation, solialization and information program being run by the hospital. These patients are living in homes for special care at night and in the daytime are coming back to the hospital to- work on the grounds, in the- laundry or in special workshops. Somne have been in hospital for many years and this is their first time back in the community. Mrs. Wikholm and Mrs. %ou Seasonal changes may af- fect your hair, ieaving if dry and briffie. "AIl that is needed now is a meeting place for them." Plans are for the dis- charged patients to meet one night a week fromn 6:30 p.mn. to 9 p.mn., probably on Wednesday or Thursday evenings. Once a month there would be an outing into the con- munity to a hockey game, dance or some other àactivity. A similar program was started in Bowmanville in July 1977 as a, pilot projeet, and has been, successful enough that the hospital wants to start one in Whitby.Y At 1Bowmanville, 30 former patients fromn five homes for special care are taking part in the program with an 80 per cent turnout rate. "We want to use as much input from the former patients as possible," says Mrs. Wikholm, ançl we want to clraw up a monthly pro- grain of activities in the commnun ity."1 The recreation staff of the hospital are looking from volutîteers, maIe and female f.o help with the program.
