This will apply, then, to those of you who are being assessed according to the by-law passed last year. Elsewhere in this newspaper you will find a survey on downtown redevelopment, a portion of the space for which was kindly donated by the Free Press. The B3oard of Management wouldappreciate your response for a number of reasons. In the first. place, we need your input into our plans, especially since it is your assessment money that we are using. Therefore, we feel that we- have an obligation to inforni you of how we are spending your money, and also that you have a right, to tell us how this money should be, spent. Secondly, we feel that communication and an information exchange between the Board and the business community is essential to'avoid any rumisunderstandings that may arise. U personally will be sendingout a newslette r within the next short while informning ail business people within the redevelopmfent area of what has been happening thus far. Yet this survey is the first and possibly the most vital step in the communication process, as it lets us know what you think. So please respond. The survey was instituted.primarily to obtain your thoughts on the Mainstreet Revitalization Program. Incidentally' I have complete information on the pro gram, and will be including it with the newsletter, but please feel free to get in touch with me 'if you need additional information. The B3oard was given the mandate to spend $1O,OOO over Lhe next calendar year on oromotinE the redevelnnmenta're Thp general consensus was that the money was neot to be spent on capital developmnent projeets. At the time that this mandate was given, the Board was unaware of the Mainstreet program. On the survey 1 have delineated as clearly as possible within the space I had the purposes of the prograrn. As you can see, it is to be used on capital development projects. By this I d on't mnean trees end park benches. I mean purchasing such things as splash guards which could be erected along the north side of Dundas by the Bank of, Com merce in the winer, or pedestriann shelters, or even purchasing land for parking lots or parkettes. In other words, we are looking at things which are of general benefit to ail, and flot just to a particular merchant who might want a tree planted in front of his store. We also, of course, want to concentrate on areas other than the immediate four corners business district. The Board generally thought this Mainstreet prograni was worth invesigating further. It Will give us money to spend, but thé money must be repaid in part from the assessment, which does not necessarily mean that the assessment wîll have to be raised. It does not necessarily mean that the assessment wil have to be raised. It does, however, commit usto a long term project, likely a 'minimum of 5 years. It is eîntirely possible that the town ýwill also be able to assist in repaying this 10w iiiterest ban. We wish to pursue' this prog 'ram to the point where we have a complete plan down on paper, with proposed- projects and complete costs. We will not comm it ourselves in any way -without going back to the business community with the plan for their approval. But f irst we must make you aware of What we ar e doing, and this'survey and column are the initialsteps. We do nlot want to involve you in something you don't want to be involved in, se please respond. It's important'both to you and to in m,ý
