Dlrec- tors of Famnily and Children's Services of the Durham, Region (also known as Child- ren' s Aid Society) communicated wlth the people of this commun- lty by means of this newspaper. At t hat time we described some of the n eeds and concerns of the Children's Aid Society regarding the welfaeof children in our area. The response of the people of Durham Region- durlng last year's Public Relations campaign was greatly appreciated. We had many cails f rom citizens who were willlng to as 'lsst in the role of Foster Parents or Volurteers. Again, we wish to impart information to the people of this area and to solicit assistan ce from them in solving, some 'of the problems we are experiencing at this time. -As in the past, our ef fecti veness 15 Ask us about you Corne ahd tell us what youre looking for in a job. Special concern exists in the area of Child Abuse which is a grow- _ing problem ln our society. To meet 'the growing need for assis- tance to the families where abuse is a reality, our Agency has formu- lated a Child Abuse Team by restructuring our staff. However, the ultimate goal regarding abuse is preventilon. With 'our present financlal situa- tion, prevention services are very I i mited. This' can eventually lead- to more costly services later when aq child is deemed, to be in need 0f protection, and, is taken into care. This- is in, addition to the perm- anent physi cal and emotional damiage to the members of the fam ily - Our themne in our public,,Relations campaig n for this year is '"Prevention" 'and,, once again we are solici- ting your help in several areas: (1) To make our local, provincial and federal governments aware of' your concern for child- ren and families as a priority and to encour- age' and demand the support of your representatives in the area of financial support for child welfare programis. (2) To volunteerý your personal assistance in working with a chlld or family under the .super- vision 0f a social worker. (3) To apply to become foster parents, particu- larly for teenagers. The need for appropriate foster parents for this age group is always great and our resources are constantly being depleted. Smith performed the baptisrn rites, assisted. by Eider Orner Edgeley who gave the parents the baptismal certi- ficates as each child wvas baptised. The hope- was expressed that Mr. Mick's stay in the Hospital would not be any longer than possible and that he would have a rapid recovery to good health.
