NOVEMBER 1, 1978, WHITBY FREE PRESS Des Newman possible regional chairmanl Although he is not making any public statements on his plans for the future, it is understood that former Whitby Mayor Des Newman is under pressure to run for chairman of the Region of Durham. Mr. Newman was a possible regional candidate in the Nov. 13 municipal election, according to rumors around town, but when the nonination day came and went, his name was not among those running for office. Mr. Newman disagrees with current Regional Chair- man Walter Beath's policies of handling the chairman- ship, but is keeping closed- mouthed about his own political future. The .vote for regional chairman is scheduled for Dec. 6, and according to Bill 162 which created the Region of Durham, someone from outside the ranks of council could run for chairman.' Walter Beath has already announced his intention to seek the chairman's position again. He was appointed by the provincial government in the fall of 1973, and elected by the cotncil of the region in, January 1977. So far, Mr. Beath is the only declared candidate for Regional Chairman. Bruce Davis and his brother Barry, who own Holiday World on Dundas Street, purchased landin the Pringle Creek area at Victoria Street in 1974 at the time the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority established possible flood-prone areas and banned any building on the site. Mr. Davis had contem- plated going to the courts to stop the reconstruction of Highway 401 when his own building was banned.in the same area because of flood plain restrictions. Mr. Davis has learned, however, that an engineer- ing study by CLOCA might permit building on the site by 1981 when Victoria Street is realigned and twin 20-inch culverts are built for Pringle Creek through the CNR embankment.
